I have a DBX286 preamp. is it alright to use the compressor and gate for auditions or should I bypass everything?

You want your voice to sound like the audio you would deliver.  In most cases, these clients just want to be able to lay in a music track or cut your voice in under their video and be done with it.

I agree - record it how you're going to record the final product. That way the client knows EXACTLY what they're getting.
