I just bought a Blue Yetti mic for my MacBook pro. It jacks directly in via USB cable and has an independent gain control on the back. It's been really easy to use and has a nice sound (I booked 4 jobs with it, so it's "working" for me!)

I use a Neumann 102 with an M-AUDIO MobilePre that plugs right into my MAC with the USB. It's been working well so far.

I am on a Mac also, but it really comes down to one thing:
Your soundcard. This is often an external device which converts the sound of your mic from analogue, to digital, so that the computer software can record it.
Lots of choices out there for soundcards.
If you can compare a few in the same environment, that's ideal.
I'd recommend buying the highest end sound card you can afford.
If you buy quality, it's an investment that you can potentially resell. If you buy a more entry level piece of gear, chances are you'll have to replace it in time, and will get virtually nothing for it.
(voice of my own, frustrating experience)
