Answered: How much copy should be recorded for an audition. Should it be a complete read? Should it be 30 of 60 seconds?

In addition to not providing a complete "liftable" commercial, if you only record a few lines, you can do two or three versions, to show a little variety in the style and pace. This is an effective tool in getting the client to give you more consideration.

Answered: Is it better to edit out breaths on my auditions or reduce them, or take them out completely?

I usually don't edit breaths on auditions unless they are terribly distracting and noisy. On actual jobs, I edit them for commercials and on-hold messaging but not for narration.

Answered: How do I record a demo or audition with background music from your free music site.

Go to: https://www.voices.com/royalty-free-music. Pick which type of music (background, sound effects, etc.). The "Music Beds" section has music that you have to pay for, but all the others are free to download. Just click on a track to listen to it, then right click and select "Save As," then tell your computer where to save it for later use.

Once that's done, open your audio recording software. Add an additional track that will run at the same time as your recorded voice. Paste or drag the file into the second track. Voilà!

Unless they request background music, I would NOT include music in custom demos. For a general Voices.com demo, I don't see a reason why you can't. Just make sure it sounds REALLY professional.

Answered: Can one add music, effects, reverb, etc. to a custom audition if it has not been requested, or should it always be dry?

Hi - I've been a voice actor for over 20 years (see my profile for a client list). You should send your auditions without effects unless requested to do something else. The client needs to hear your voice before processing so they know what they'll be working with. Even for animation (and maybe especially for animation), keep it dry. I recently did a trailer and the game voice for a new module of Everquest. The processing they wanted to do on my voice was quite extensive to give it an otherworldly sound. The game designers had something specific in mind and were able to hear what they wanted in my "base" voice.

The only exceptions I can think of would be a telephone on-hold where music is requested or radio bumpers which are going to be produced by you, so they're listening to the whole package.

Answered: What does "Template" mean?

Your templates area is the private storage area that can be used to create and store text templates used for audition purposes. Think of it as your cover letter for your audition!

When it comes to auditioning you will fill in the proposal box with your introduction to the client. You can either type something new each and every time you audition or you can create templates that you can use over and over again and modify when needed.

To either create a new, edit or delete an old proposal template, visit Inbox and click on the Templates link. You will have access to your created templates each time you audition. You will be able to select the correct template from a drop down box and then edit as necessary.

This is an excellent way to save time and effort when auditioning.

To create templates, go to Messages and click on Templates from the drop down menu or you can create them right from the audition screen for a job.

To create a new template click on +Add
Give your template a name. Example - Commercial Audition template.
Once finished click Save and this template will be listed in the template drop down list when you're in a job audition screen.

A proposal should include a greeting to the client (by name if possible), an introduction of yourself, why you're interested in the project, list a job or client that relates to the type of project you're auditioning for and your quote or an explanation of your quoting method.

Hello,

Yes, you're welcome to use this as a testimonial on your Voices.com profile. If the client has left you this feedback, then it should be fine to use this information as a testimonial.

However, it might be best if you ask the client first, just to confirm
Answered: When you state 'record a portion of the client's script' do you mean a portion of the sample script provided?

We recommend all talent to protect their work by only recording small portions of provided scripts, introducing watermarking sounds or slating to render audio useless other than for reviewing the voice in the demo.

Slating and reading only a portion of a provided script are the least intrusive of these methods but in cases where the script is so short that reading only a portion is more or less impossible, a watermark can serve to help protect your recording.

Whether you are using music, a repeating tone or sound effects, the key is make sure that the client knows that these are deliberately placed watermarks and not flaws in your recording process. Simply stating in your audition terms that you have marked the recording and what the mark is can prevent clients from misinterpreting your marks as indicative of some problem with your audition.

Answered: Sending mp3s to potential clients

The client actually has the option to share your audition responses with their clients, if need be. They would just need to hold a Business Edition account with us.

Business Edition clients have a unique feature that lets you download the audition and save it to your hard drive or with just a few clicks, you can build a shareable web page that can be sent to colleagues or clients.

You can always reach out to Voices.com to assist you in the this matter by calling us toll-free at 1-888-359-3472 or email support@voices.com.

Answered: Some of my uploaded demos won't play, though I've recorded all in the same way. How can I fix this?

Hi Gordon -

They played fine on Safari and Firefox. You do have a sound issue, however. All of your files are too "hot," meaning that the original recording was recorded at too high a level and the sound buzzes when played back. You should re-record these without slating your name at the front. Most folks only listen to a few seconds of a demo and will quickly bore with hearing your name over and over again! Use it on auditions, but not on demos. Also - be careful of using auditions as your demos. Many clients post repeatedly and if they search your profile and hear you using copy from another one of their projects (one you weren't hired for), they may have a problem with it. If you like the copy, rewrite it (since you should re-record your demos anyway). Keep the style, but not the substance, if it is a product-type that your voice is right for. Get yourself some decent speakers to monitor your recordings and check for level problems. Good luck!

That would help us suggest possible remedies.
Answered: When auditioning do we read the full script or the sample script given to us?

Always read from the sample script. If the sample script is the entire job, I usually only read a part of it. That way, you can submit a couple of different "takes" on the script showing different attitudes, etc.

Answered: How long does it take to book a job after the deadline?

Online, as in local auditions, you will rarely be notified that you didn't get a job, only if you booked it (or in the case of more local auditions, get a "callback" and need to submit another round of auditions). Sometimes clients here will send a nice little form letter, but that's about it. As for turn-around time - for most jobs on this site, gigs book within a week. That being said, there are some jobs that have gone a month or longer. Your best bet, with any audition, is to do it and forget it. Your concern on a site like this one is to get good at fast turnaround on auditions and submit as many auditions as you can per day. 10 -20 is not unusual. You want to turn each one around in about 10 minutes.

You have an "answered" tab, where you can see all of the jobs you've responded to. You can sort them, like an EXCEL spreadsheet. I usually go in a couple of times a day and sort first by "Status" and then by "Deadline." If a job is listed as "Finalizing" or "Working" it means that someone has been contacted and is agreeing to the price or recording the job. You can delete those. The "Date" shows the date on which the client has chosen to stop accepting auditions (not the day the project is due). If a job is listed as "closed" then the client has stopped accepting bids. If a job goes a week past the "deadline" and you have not received a checkmark, you can safely delete it. Otherwise, let them ride. In time you will see which jobs get a listen and which get a thumbs-up (like). Some likes turn into jobs and some don't, but if you see a pattern in the types of jobs you are "liked" on, you can prioritize those jobs when you audition. The earlier you audition on a project, the better chance you have of being heard. I cap it at 50, but some go higher (or lower).

Good luck!

Answered: Does Support have workarounds/suggestions for Java security issue?

Hi Loretta,

The alert the US issued also actually included a work around that you may find helpful.

Go to the Java Control Panel that is installed along with the runtime, and in the Security section uncheck the option to "Enable Java content in the browser," which will disable the browser plug-in. This will prevent the inadvertent execution of exploits that may be stumbled upon when browsing the Web, and is a recommended setting for most people to do. If you need to see a Java applet on the Web, then you can always temporarily re-enable the plug-in.

We hope this helps!
Answered: When using iPad to reply to a job, how do you label your recording

To offer your files to the widest possible audience, use filenames that are compatible with computers around the world.

Consider the following when naming files:

Special characters in filenames can cause problems on some computers. Use only uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and the underscore (_) in your filenames.

Refrain from putting spaces in file name. Instead, use the underscore (_) to separate words. Use a period (.) only to separate a filename extension from the rest of the name. Do not begin a filename with a period.

Example of good file names: JaneDoe_Commercials_2008 or JohnDoe_CharacterReel_2005

Special Notes Some computers rely on filename extensions (for example, the ".doc" in the filename "letter.doc" or ".mp3" in "demo.mp3") to decide which application should open a file. If you don't include extensions in your filenames, someone downloading a file might not know how to open it. Some computers use short filenames.

To make sure anyone can copy shared files, use 8 or fewer characters to name them (12 characters total if you include an extension). If you include extensions in your filenames, when someone using a different type of computer tries to download a file from your file sharing page, their browser may open the file in a browser window instead of copying the file to their disk. In this case, they should be able to use the browser's Save or Save As command to save a copy of the file.

To answer your second question, all auditions and demos must be uploaded in an Mp3 file format. If the client is requesting a AIFF file, then you will be able to send them this file format after the job has been awarded to you.

Answered: Audition not yet reviewed but Job Posting indicates that client listened to all of them.

Deborah is correct. The 15 out of 15 responses means you are the 15th person to audition for that particular job posting.

The "Not yet reviewed" means the client has not listened to your audition as of yet. The "Green Check Mark" feature allows talent to see if their audition had been reviewed or not. This indicator is triggered when the client clicks on the flash player to hear the audio submitted. The purpose of the feature is to allow you to follow the status of the project and know if you've bee reviewed or not. Even if your audition has not been reviewed it is not a judgment of your abilities, it is an indicator of how the client manages their responses and each client is different.

Our suggestion is to use the audition review indicator as a tool for providing you with more information in terms of your auditions. If you find that many of your auditions are not being reviewed you may want to look at your proposal as clients do have the option of reviewing your proposal prior to listening to your audio.

Answered: Do you have suggestions on how to get custom demos reviewed/listened to ?

Get up and do your auditions first thing in the morning and check back during the day. If you did an audition and it didn't get a listen, it means the client found what they were looking for in the auditions BEFORE yours. Even though the % voice match can move you up in the line up, it can't jump you over people with the same % as you, or higher. So always hedge your bets and get in there as quickly as possible.

Practice streamlining your audition process, so you can record, edit and send in less than 10 minutes/audition. It will be a valuable skill when you do the jobs later, as your turn-around time will be faster on finished work too.

Also, make sure to use the template function. Create templates for different types of jobs, so you can quickly attach the important info and just edit the details. I have general, commercial, corporate, gaming and phone templates. I also have a template for "non-specific" auditions. Where the client did NOT ask for a custom demo.

Good luck!

Answered: On audition files, how much clean-up (de-"ess"ing, click/pop mouthing and breath removal) are people generally doing?

I can't speak for everyone, but you need to streamline your audition process so that you're not doing too much editing or learn to do it really fast. Your read is the most important feature of the audition, but clients are looking at production quality too. Ultimately, learning to do really, really quick edits will let you get more auditions in the can, and also up your value on jobs you book. It will speed-up turn-around time and also allow you to make more $/hour. If I do a job for $200 and it takes me 1 hour to record and edit total, I make $200/hour - pretty cool. If I do the same job and it takes me 3 hours to record and edit, I'm making $66.67/hr. More than minimum wage, but not really standard pay for professional voice actors. Long answer to a short question. Hope it helps!

Answered: What is the best way to slate?

The best was to slate is to state your name and the name of the project at the beginning of your audition. You may also want to name your submitted audio file with the job number and your first initial and last name.

For auditions try: "Joel Ballard for Sony Online Entertainment"
For demos use: "Joel Ballard, Commercial Demo"

Some clients do have the ability to download your audition files and send them to clients and colleagues. This is why we do recommend slating, so that your actual name does not get lost in the shuffle.

We hope this helps!
Answered: Should I be editing auditions to remove breaths, clicks, false starts, etc, or just give them the raw audio?

I can only give you my perspective which might be different from anyone else. It took about 100 auditions before I booked my first job on Voices. Since then, I don't really see a pattern or ratio of number of auditions to jobs received. For me it has more to do with getting the audition in quickly (before no more than 25 others). I do edit everything out of the file (breaths, room noises, false starts etc.) before sending it. Once the client used my audition as the final product. It was short and they didn't need a re record.

My advice is to send a clean audition and learn to do it as fast as you can. Good luck.

Answered: how do you get audition in quickly when you work full time on rotating shifts?

This web site might not be the best tool for people who have limited time or access to recording equipment. I have only found success by auditioning within 10 minutes of when a job is posted. If I see that more than 40 people have already submitted an audition then I delete the post and wait for the next. It's a risk I choose to take but I get really bummed when I do what I consider a terrific audition only to see the job COMPLETED without my audition ever having been heard. I'm picky about what I audition for so I try to increase my chances by matching my strengths to the job and getting in quickly. Others may take a different approach.

There are pay-to-play sites where response time is not as critical for the voice job seeker. You should investigate them to see if they meet your needs. Good luck. This game ain't easy.

I once had a voice seeker give my audition a listen and then contact me six months later to tell me I got the gig! Before that happened I would delete a submission after about a month. Now, I wait six months if the audition has been listened to before deleting it.

Answered: How is my Voices.com audition submission going to stand out, espcially out of 100-150 submissions?

I don't consider myself an expert or even a huge success with Voices. However, I've earned about a dozen gigs from this site and I got them, in part, by learning to respond very quickly to a post. Like within 2 minutes. I also must have had that unknown quality, "the sound" they were looking for. You can never really know what that might be no matter what's in the description. And the other person is correct about timing. The jobs seem to get posted between 8am and 10am Eastern time and then again after 3pm eastern time. Even if I think I'm perfect for the job I won't send an audition if there are more than 40 submissions already. You might have a different experience with this site, though.

Answered: Why do so many voice seekers not review auditions?

Hi Andrew -

I've been using Voices.com successfully since about this time last year and have booked over 70 jobs from it, so for me - it HAS been worth it. I've been doing VO for over 20 years and Voices.com is one of the most useful tools I've ever found. But like all tools, you need to learn how to use it to its fullest. I listened to your demo and your reads, once heard, should do well. You need to turn around your auditions faster. Do a couple of different takes and send them. Don't do breath clean up, unless you suck wind like a Hoover! If the overall quality is good and you give engaging, varied reads, you will have a good shot. I submit 10 -20 auditions per DAY. The "0" submissions of "X" is how many you have submitted. The second number is how many have been submitted before you. The percent match system will place you higher in the order the higher a percentage you match to the client job (the client doesn't see the percent match but WILL see you sooner if you are a better match than others, even if they submitted first). That said, I find it's most productive to be within the first 50 folks to submit. So, if I open a job and see "0 of 60 Submitted," I personally delete it. Yes, you might still get a listen, but you are hoping that the client is willing to listen to a good number of demos to get to you. I then sort my jobs by language. I do a lot of dialects, but usually only for commercials or cartoons. I'm not trying to pass myself off as British to the British. So I delete the ones that are for British companies. Next, I sort by pay. Jobs that pay better, of course, get more hits, so to get in early, you want to do those FIRST. Then, I look at what's left. For the lower paying jobs - which are worth doing - quick and easy? Phone systems - usually very fast. A quick :30 or :60 - sure. Although auditions come in throughout the day, a bunch come first thing in the AM and another set in the afternoon. Do a little triage, get your auditions out faster and do more of them. Hopefully, you'll see a rise in your hit rate. Other people have other systems for handling the traffic. Just work as fast (and well) as you can.

Good luck!

Answered: is it better to provide a new demo for a script or an existing demo ?

If copy is provided with the job posting, then the client generally expects you to do a reading of their copy. Some clients get very frustrated with generic demos, when they have requested a specific read. You don't have to read the entire script provided, just enough to give them a good idea of what you can do. Also, if you do a shorter read, you can do two or three versions to show variety. I only provide existing demos if there is no copy provided.

Hi Ralph,

Public job postings are open only to talent with active subscriptions with Voices.com. That's why you are seeing the upgrade page when you try to respond to a project.

You can still be privately invited to any job by a client, and we do have guests members that get work all the time via the site. Open jobs are reserved for members with subscriptions however.
Answered: What is significance of a private job offer?

Private job offers can be offered to more than one voice talent, however the average is generally somewhere between 5 and 10 invitations per project. (We have seen jobs with just one private audition and we have seen jobs with more than 50 private auditions however.)

The system should automatically set any private audition request to 100% as the client has actually gone into the database, located your profile and listened to your demos and has asked for a voice request from your personally.

We hope that answers your question!

Why did I receive the exact same-worded thank you email from 2 separate clients?

Yesterday I received this email from a client who had given my audition a "thumbs up".
"Thank you for choosing to audition for my job posting. Although we won't be working together on this project specifically, I am keeping you in mind for future opportunities. I really like your voice and can already think of upcoming work that might call for your particular voice."
This would have been all well and good but I recognised it as being exactly the same as one I had received 2 months ago where strangely the client did not seem to have listened to my audition as it was never assigned a green tick/check. I checked and it was a different client.
Are there templates for clients to thank talents, and if so, how come they are able to use them if they don't even hear the talent's submission??! Talents are at risk of being given disingenuous and invalid feedback. Has anyone else received the above??

Is it necessary to watermark your work?

I've seen comments on jobs about slating and watermarking your work. I am new to the industry and just getting started. I did find some comments here about how to slate your audition and I feel I have an understading on that. I have heard of watermarking video work, but I did not know you can do that with audio. I don't think my recording program has that functionality, though. Is this necessary?

does new Voices phone app give iPhone talents an unfair advantage over Android phone users?

The Voices iPhone app is billed as making it easier than ever for iPhone users to submit demos... even when they're away from their home studios. That's great for them but Android based users are out in the cold on this and I understand it will be months before Voices develops an app for Android. Any way to speed up development of an Android version? Just sayin'.....

New mail is delivered once a minute, yet a new audition has 15 responses?

My mail program checks for new messages once every minute, so how, when I receive an audition request, it already has as many as 15 responses? Anyone else notice this?

Are there trainers/mentors who could be hired for guidance on not just voice/sound, but the big picture?

I've been winging it for about a year now, sporadically, and am just now seriously taking up voice-over work pretty much full-time. Going mostly on intuition, and biased by my own hopes and personal perspectives, I'm wondering what weak points I may have. I'd really like to get some input from an impartial outside observer.
