Answered: Quick couple of newbie questions :(

Hi Drew -

Once you have been awarded the job, the money is in escrow and if the client does not release the funds, you can report it to Voices.com, who will ensure you are paid. After you send a file, you request approval (you'll see the button). If the client doesn't respond right away, message them. After your files have been approved, you have another button you can use to request release of funds. I've found that some clients need to be reminded of this, as they honestly don't understand that putting funds in escrow doesn't automatically pay you. I've done nearly 100 jobs on this site so far and have yet to be stiffed.

Be sure you have plenty of tags and buzzwords in order to drive more traffic your way. You can look at my profile and see what I mean. It's overwritten for a reason! Also, having several demos specific to areas you are most likely to book (even if it is just a few lines without music), and tagging each one with as many descriptors as possible will enhance your matches. This will up the number of leads in your box. It's all based on how the computer engine matches words on your profile to the client's request. The customer service is good on this site and if you encounter any problems, you can call or chat with someone who will help you out. I've been very happy (and successful) here!

Answered: Getting frustrating! What am I doing wrong?

Fuck this site. Forty people audition within minutes of a job posting and many people are shown favor by virtue of name recognition, a superior advertising budget and years of experience.

I canceled my membership for good recently. Unless you want to spend more money than you make by paying for your membership, I suggest you cancel also. Your chances of success with this site are small.

Answered: How are there responses to job postings that just posted?

Check to see if it isn't your browser working slowly. For example, If I am working in Sarari, the upload speed and refresh time are much longer than in Firefox. Leads may have posted a bit sooner to some folks on a faster browser.

As long as you respond within the first 50 posts, you have a very good chance of being heard. Also, the higher your voice-match score to the job, the further up in the line you will jump (for example, if 5 people answered before you, but none had a voice-match above 80% and yours is 95%, you jump to the head of the listening line for the client).

Check your voice-match scores on various postings. If you think yours is too low, add a demo in that style, along with some descriptive language that is specific to the style of job you are applying for. For example, I have done DOZENS of direct marketing spots, but when I saw one posted to my site a few months ago, I only had about an 80% match. I recorded a direct-marketing demo and made sure to add tags and language to my profile regarding my experience, to up my score. It worked.

Answered: What does this mean? "0 responses of 49"? This is posted on job listings. The number varies. Thanks

The 49 is how many people have submitted auditions to be considered by the job poster. I you have not responded to the particular job the first number will be zero... if you respond it will change to a one.

The goal is to get your audition in as quickly as possible before the second number gets higher than 25 or so. The higher the second number gets the more competition you're up against and the tougher the odds that you'll book the job.

Some job posters listen to every single audition... but many listen to the first couple of dozen and then award the job.

As soon as you see the job post in your inbox... jump on it if it's right for you and fire that audition in there. good luck

Answered: How does voice match determine what percentage of a match a talent is to a job?

Voices.com offers the leading online marketplace that connects business people with professional voice-over talent.

What is VoiceMatch?

VoiceMatch is a recommendation engine. It is the name for what we've been doing all along, matching up talent profiles with job postings! Voice talent are able to see their individual VoiceMatch scores on a job per job basis before they audition. VoiceMatch scores help talent gauge how qualified they are for the opportunities they receive.

How does VoiceMatch work?
-The VoiceMatch score is out of 100 and puts a numerical value on the talent's direct match to a job posting.
-The scores are based on profile settings and demo tags. The more settings that match the job requirements the higher the VoiceMatch score.
-Voice talent see a VoiceMatch score in their job posting notifications helping them be more selective in which jobs to audition for. Clients receive auditions online which are ordered by VoiceMatch, highest score to lowest score, placing the best matched voice talent on top.

How VoiceMatch helps voice-over talent work smarter

Talent can use VoiceMatch as an indicator for how qualified they are for a particular job saving time when auditioning online.

The VoiceMatch score is out of 100 and puts a numerical value on their direct match and helps to take the guesswork out of how likely one is to be considered.

VoiceMatch shows a number out of a possible 100% perfect match. Here's how the points add up:
First Language 25
Second Language 20
Third Language 15
Fourth Language 10
Fifth Language 5
Gender 25
Skill Category 15
Age Range 10
Union Affiliation 5
Budget Ranges 5
Demo Category 5
Demo Tag 1 5
Demo Tag 2 5
TOTAL 100
Answered: When you have completed and recorded an assignment, how do you send it to the contact?

Under the "Files" tab, you can upload your completed files. Occasionally, if there are a ton of individual files, I will make arrangements with the client to send files via WeTransfer or to their DropBox. Just be sure, if you do this, that you remind them to approve files and release payment, since they won't be looking at the site to retrieve the files.

Answered: In the deleted file, auditions sent icon appears, what does this mean

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us. This is new feature. It is a new icon that appears only in the deleted folder that lets you know this was a job posting that they sent a reply to. If it doesn't have a green check-mark it means the audition was sent but not yet reviewed.

Hope that helps!
Answered: Are job posters becoming more demanding/arrogant?

Hi Loretta -

Having played on sites like these for years, I've experienced the whole range of clients - from experienced producers who understand and work with a reasonable budget to bottom feeders who are trolling for the lowest rate. I'm actually glad when a poster is openly arrogant or unrealistic with their budgets. Makes dumping them from the job postings quick and painless (because working for them won't be). On a site like this, there are a great number of very new, inexperienced talents who would work for ANY money. The arrogant producers who want an ISDN line for a hundred bucks will get them. They will get what they pay for. The talent will gain a valuable lesson too, and will most likely never respond to a job for that low a fee again. I've noticed that the lowballers and jerks get very low responses, so in time they may learn their lessons too. I use this site because it sends me far more potential clients than I would reach on my own. If you do market independently, try doing both and set up a good tracking system, so you can break down your job rate and income from all sources. Then you'll have data for your marketing strategy in the future. Personally, I've done this for almost 30 years, and I've never built a client base as fast as I have with this service.

Answered: Does Voices implement legal confidentiality requirements to protect a clients sensitive content?

Voices.com does not supply confidentiality agreements. We do apologize for that. If your project is sensitive and does require confidentiality, we do recommend that you obtain a confidentiality agreement for the voice talent to sign and fax to you and post your job on the site with a dummy/fake script for readings.

Best of luck with your project!
Answered: How many jobs are booked each month?

Unfortunately, there is no set number for booked jobs in a month and we do apologize for that. Job booking fluctuate based on the amount of job postings that we receive, the urgency of the posting and the quality of the auditions. Additionally, we do have long term projects that are hired for on a as needed basis and this can add to the amount of hirings every month.

Best of luck!
Answered: Voices.com sloooow this week?

Hi Michael,

Essentially, Voices.com has outgrown our old server and we are in the process of upgrading to a brand new, much more powerful server that will be installed this Sunday. Additionally, we will be implementing cloud storage and capacity as well, so that in future if we run into an issue with capacity or memory we'll be able to access the cloud directly for additional resources.

We've made these choices to ensure that the service returns to our fast and reliable standard and we apologize for any difficulty you have had in accessing the service.
Hi Trip,

A lot of clients use the thumbs up symbol to narrow down to their finalists for the roles they are casting for. If they have 60 or 70 auditions, and they favorite the ones they like best, it's easy to find on their list of auditions. If you're getting thumbs up on your auditions, it generally means that you're in the top 5-10% of voice talent auditioning for that job. It's a good thing!

If you accepted the payment terms, it should have moved to "working." If the job is stuck, call customer service and they can move it manually, then you can upload it to the "files" tab.

Answered: Does anyone wish that Voices.com would require voice seekers to rank the auditions?

Deborah gives the best advice in her answer concerning this: submit your audition and move on to the next one. I use both sites and at first loved seeing that I was a "finalist" in many auditions. But after not getting those gigs I always felt let down. So now I don't bother to check them for a couple of weeks. Maybe longer. That said, rankings are not always a good indicator how things might go. I have been hired only once on 123 and didn't even get a "finalist" ranking with that one. Deborah is correct. This a numbers game. That fact makes it difficult for many in the herd to participate fully.

Like you, I sure wish everyone who "liked" me hired me, but it's certainly not a waste. Look at the jobs for which you've been "liked." Is there a pattern? Often the final choice just comes down to a sound, not a performance (ie - it's just not YOUR gig this time), but if there are types of jobs you're favored for more than others, you can use this to prioritize auditions on a busy day. Also, try doing more than one take, with a slightly different read for jobs in your frequently "liked" category. Hearing one more version might just tip the scales in your favor next time.

Answered: Does anyone ever REALLY buy the voices advertised on ebay?

Yup. Take a look at the 'bay's "completed listings" (see link below). Assuming the transactions are legit, one person gives it up for well under $20 a pop--at least two "sales" to the same buyer. (The seller also auctions/sells other commodities on the bay.) Another talent offers 1-2-min segments for $100; so far no takers (but then, the seller is competing with the aforementioned lowballer).
Answered: If you complete a job, are you entitled to use it as a demo?

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to use a client's audio file as one of your demos without getting the client's permission.

Your best course of action is to contact your client directly and explain that you would like to use their audio file on your demo reel and see if they mind. Some clients have privacy and proprietary information that they do not wish to have in public on demo reels. Most clients are very understanding of requests for usage however, so it never hurts to ask. Just make sure that you respect their decision and any conditions that the client may have for usage.

Answered: What is the difference between a response and a submission ?

If you mean the line that says "0 Submitted of 59 Responses," that means that you have not yet submitted, but 59 others have. If you go into your "Answered" tab after you post an audition, you can see, in the same section, where your submission falls out of the total number. For example it might say "60 Submitted out of 75 Responses." That means 75 people responded and you are 60th in line. If you have a high voice-match percentage, you may be bumped up For example, your voice match percentage might boost your number higher than 60, so it might now say "46 Submitted of 75 Responses." Check out posts and blogs about voice matching to see how this can affect you.

There could be a number of reasons. It may be that they are putting together a presentation with a number of different slides or graphics and each sentence matches one slide or picture. If they lack audio editing skills, they are just asking you to do what an editor would do. It takes more time, so remember to include that time in your bid.

Answered: What's the best way to see when new contracts were posted?

Hi Jon - my best advice is to treat this as a regular job. Go to work (online) as soon as you can each morning (that's when the first batch usually arrives). You can see how many people have already answered in the section that says "0 of 45" etc. Yes, voicematch will bump you up, if your profile match is 80% or above, but once you start seeing that 80 - 100 people are ahead of you, it won't help as much. Remember, if you and another actor have the same percentage voicematch numbers, the person who posted first is placed first, so there may be a larger number of equally or more matched candidates ahead of you, if you post later. If you want someone to listen to your demos, you need to post within the day and preferably within an hour or so of the job posting. There are a lot of actors on this site and many are near their computers all day, so they can answer right away. Another batch usually arrives in the afternoon. I do "triage" and delete jobs that have been around all day, or are at the edge of my abilities. For example, I can sound young and bright, but I don't have a trendy gen y sound, so I delete those. I am a dialect coach and do dozens of accents, but these are best used in short projects or games, so a narration requiring a native British speaker is also out. Aim to do 10 -20 auditions a day, from among THAT day's postings. Do a couple of takes of each read and vary them, to show range. Remember that people who are posting in a price range are typically looking to book the lower number you see, so bid as close to that as you comfortably can, especially in the beginning.

Good luck.

Answered: About how long until you find out if you are selected for a voiceover job?

Hi Bob -

First of all, the time for a client to choose a talent varies WIDELY! Sometimes, they need to fill a job, like, yesterday. So the second they hear a voice that even comes close, they offer the job and it's over. Then there are those jobs you may have written off from January, but NO, they just hadn't gotten around to the project for some reason. Generally though, I find that most jobs turn around in a week or two (given weekends and all). So, in your "answered" folder, you'll see the "job status" tab. I usually click this twice. The second click will bring all of the jobs that are complete or nearly so to the top. "Finalizing" means that the client is offering money and the talent hasn't "accepted yet." If it's in your "answered" folder, the talent wasn't you. "Working" means that the talent accepted the money and is recording or has recorded the project, and the files have not yet been "accepted." Once the files are "accepted" by the client, they usually then release the funds and the jobs shows as "completed." Also, for you, the talent, once the job is "completed," your name appears in the top 100 recently hired on the front page. Neat, huh? As a talent, you will know that you are hired when you receive a happy e-mail that says, "You have received a deposit." Go to your "awarded" tab, click on the job and "accept" the money to begin work. The money is actually in escrow unitl the job is complete. Sometimes a client has a question before hiring, in that case, you'll get an e-mail saying, "you have a new message." You often also get an e-mail saying, "instructions for job #." Every once in a while, a client will choose not to use the escrow service and want to pay you directly in some other way. This is OK, but with new clients, it's a good idea to get something up front. Remember that when you bill through Paypal directly, Paypal takes a wee chunk as a transaction fee. Some corporations don't use paypal and will pay net 30 via check. If it is a well-known company, I usually allow this, since they will often send you a contract to sign (binding both ways). That was probably waay more information than you'd hoped for, but I hope it actually answered your questions.

Answered: How do I go about getting a talents voice on an answering machine?

That depends on the answering machine. If the machine is digital, you can actually upload the audio file right to the answering machine. If it is an older machine, you may need to have the voice talent call into the answering machine or possibly even record the voice talent on site.

We have had jobs in the past where clients have had voice talent call directly into their cell phones to leave a professional sounding voice for their answering service.

Hi James - While some clients will want to listen in, I find a vast majority of my clients do not. They are happy to either chat on the phone before I record, or give notes based on my audition. I always allow for one set of pickups based on my reading included in my quote for any non-directed session. That way, I can work faster (it ALWAYS goes faster without constant direction) and the client can have their say as well. If the job pays enough, I also have a lead on a professional studio that is ISDN capable. Renting ISDN through the studio is pricey too, so it has to be a good paying gig. Otherwise, the phone patch is your best bet, and the lowest tech solution, a telephone on speaker phone is sometimes all a client needs to feel "connected."

You don't ever have to delete auditions, but I usually delete anything that is "finalizing," "working," and "completed" since another talent booked the job and I'm no longer in consideration. I find that clients will usually re-post a new job, rather than revisit old auditions, so there's no need to clutter up the box with dead jobs.

Clients can certainly contact you via your profile at any time regardless of your membership status. Voices.com's #1 goal at all time is to help our members find work and we heartily approve of any client contacting a member through their profile to hire them for a project.

As a caveat, while a client can contact you and offer you work at any time, you do need to have a demo loaded up to your profile for a client to locate you in our search engine. Voice talent that do not post demos do not appear in standard searches.

Answered: Why do Voices.com jobs appear on freelance site Donanza.com, which seems to be a VO auction platform?

My guess is that voice seekers often post jobs on a number of different sites to see what they get. Voices.com has a minimum of $100 and some clients are trolling for people who will work for even less than that. If a job that you've auditioned for on this site seems to stay in your "auditioned" file forever and never shows as "working" or "completed" there's a chance that the client found a talent on different site. I've never used DoNanza, but the idea of bidding on a site that pushes that low isn't really appealing to me.

Answered: the template indicated extensive experience, I am new, do I say to client that I am new or leave template the way it is?

Let your voice speak for itself. If you are the right voice for a project, you will get hired, whether you have ten years or ten days experience as a voice over artist.

(However, if you are a new artist, do make sure you submit auditions for projects that you can handle. If a project looks too complex for you to deal with, let more experienced voice artists have that opportunity.)

Answered: How do personal invitations from voice seekers work?

Hi Allison,

Due to some recent changes on the site, a couple of jobs sent out additional private auditions to voice talent that had already submitted responses to the project. If you had already submitted an audition for a project and received a second invitation, that would be the bug affecting you, it's not an acutal invitation from the client. It's not possible for a client to reinvite you to a project that you have already submitted an invitation for.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused you.
