STACY CARSON - In each of these demos, I try to create a PERSONAL atmosphere for the listener. It should sound like I'm talking just to them.
If more FORMAL delivery is desired, it should get the point across - you never want the listener to tune out, even to the most technical of info. I always strive to keep it interesting yet NATURAL, without straying outside a listener's comfort zone.
Training narration, conversational
STACY CARSON - More often these days, people don't want to listen to the standard professional, CORPORATE style of narration for their WEB BASED TRAINING - they still want QUALITY, but they want it to sound like the narrator is practically speaking off the cuff. It makes for a more RELAXED, CONVERSATIONAL tone, and it makes the EDUCATIONAL experience more engaging for the listener, because my cadence and delivery have an in-the-moment feel.
Instead of hearing what can become a bit of a drone, my E-LEARNING narration sounds more like it is being thought as it's being delivered. There's more of an INFORMAL, 'live presentation' vibe to it. Think Alton Brown.
Documentary styles
STACY CARSON - These are understated reads with a NATURAL, SINCERE tone. If you want information communicated without any hard sell, but with energy and a sense of REAL humanity, this is where to find it. Good for STORYTELLING and SERIOUS topics.
Commercial
I'm not going to yell at you. You deserve better. I'm just going to give you the information and trust that you are smart enough to perceive the important truths that I am conveying.
Unless you want me to yell, in which case it's probably going to be goofy, character-driven yelling. And who doesn't need more of that in their life?!?
Fiction, younger characters
This demo allows the characters - an extroverted girl, her shy counterpart and their overly sincere friend - to carry the energy and humor, while the narration is a bit deadpan in contrast.
Fiction - Narrative
This demo allows the author's irony to speak for itself, with just a touch of knowing humor to let us all in on the joke. It's energy goes to supporting the text, but not overpowering it. No one likes to be hit over the head when they're listening to a humorous author, and this delivery lets the his voice shine through.
Fiction, older characters
This demo shows off my British accents - I attended a British school in South Africa for part of my childhood and, to avoid being teased, adopted the accent. I have expanded my repertoire to include a number of regional variations, a few of which are spoken by the aged ghosts in this excerpt from "Johnny and the Dead" by Terry Pratchett.
Training, industrial - no music
STACY CARSON - This is a sample of my more FORMAL delivery, starting with a TECHNICAL podcast and continuing with standard TRAINING fare, including one upbeat piece for a youth-oriented workforce.
Non-fiction Narrative 2
When the material needs a calm voice of authority, without embellishment or self-awareness, this is the delivery that is called for. The author has well thought-out information, written for a listener who knows what he or she is getting from this book. It's not without an occasional wry smile, but generally keeps to the point.
Non-fiction Narrative 1
This is for the book that, though empathetic with different viewpoints, is not afraid to express its opinion. It doesn't need radical interpretation, but it does need to get its point across. It cares about its message and the voice that delivers it needs to carry that spontaneous, thoughtful quality.
Internet Voice Work
