- Job Description
The story takes place in 2037, the Internet has become omnipresent, and every human citizen has an implant in his or her head that constantly feeds the net into their sensory faculties. The main character Doris is one of the Model 2s: her brain and spinal cord transplanted into a mechanical chassis to fight the War. She begins to feel the consequence of the disconnection between her human mind and her mechanical body.
Pronunciation references:
Riyadh would be pronounced as 'Ree-yahd' and CAIN is pronounced 'keyn'.

(An image showing Doris with her comrades fighting the Eastern Army)
The fires of war had burnt for five years when I was drafted into the Army at the age of nineteen to make a final stand against the Eastern armies that were swarming towards Riyadh. In reality the final stand was a prolonged overrun of the Anglo-Saudi forces by the Eastern army, followed by a massive retreat westward. CAIN must have concluded that our decimal odds to survive the Eastern onslaught was a non-factor against our expendability, and assigned my battalion to hold the city's last chock point while the rest of the forces fled. We held out with an amazing will to live like a cornered dog, and blunted the advance of the East until the real weight of that million-solider army crashed upon us. Only one platoon of us remained when we abandoned our position. I saw that oversized red flag draped down on the Kingdom Tower as we drove out, as that image was broadcast across the globe, the entire Western Hemisphere declared war on the East overnight, and forty-eight hours later our bases in Egypt were crowded with armies from all parts of Europe, North Africa, and North America. The new coalition became known as the Atlantic Alliance, and we once again marched east, beginning the main course of the fourth Great War.
