It was 1475, and Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born. He grew up with his poor father in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain.

At age 26, Balboa voyaged to South America on his first Spanish expedition. Later, Balboa returned to the island of Hispaniola to raise pigs.

With the help from a local supply ship headed to the main lands, Balboa escaped his creditors.

Because of the dangerous Indians, Balboa and the ships crew moved to the western side of the gulf to Darien. Balboa became the new unofficial governor.

Then in 1513, Balboa was on his way to make history. From intelligence given by the local Indians, Balboa voyaged with 90 Spaniards to find the large ocean. From a mountain peak, Balboa sighted the Pacific Ocean. Gold was discovered, pearls were found, and great news to King Ferdinand was sent.

But before King Ferdinand received the message, Pedro Davila was appointed to be the new governor. Once the king got the message of this newfound discovery, Balboa was appointed to serve under Davila.
