The star Polaris, located in the earth's northern hemisphere, is also known to stargazers as the "North Star".
You might be surprised to learn that Polaris is not the brightest in the sky, but actually ranks 49th on a list of bright stars.
Polaris is an aging yellow super giant, 2200 times more luminous than our sun. It lies 2 1/2 million billion miles away, so far that it's light takes 4 centuries to reach us.
The star is important because it appears almost directly above the earth's North Pole. During the night, and from season to season, Polaris seems fixed to the sky as all other stars wheel around it.
One of the most charming fables about this North Star comes from native Americans......
