Staff Sergeant Gregory Hearn was born on 2 January 1961 in Flint, MI. He Graduated High School at Flint’s Northern High School, class of 1979. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps during the month of May 1984.
After completing Recruit Training, and Artillery School in 1985, he was assigned to Hotel Battery, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as a Cannon Crewman, Assistant Gunner, and Gunner. In 1988 he was appointed as a Section Chief for Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. During this tour of duty he deployed to Okinawa Japan at four different times, and this battery was activided for operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
He transferred to Recruiter’s School in 1993, upon completion of Recruiters School he was assigned to Recruiting Station Seattle. He was thus assigned to Recruiting Sub-Station Olympia Washington. While there he earned the Rookie Recruiter of the Year Honors, and numerous Recruiter of the Quarter Honors.
Upon completion of his tour as a recruiter in 1996, he was transferred to the 1st Marine Division and was assigned as to Golf Battery 2nd Battalion 11th Marines. During this period he once again deployed to Okinawa Japan. In November 1997, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division as a (SMAT) Inspector. He was assigned the duties of Safety/Hazmat. He returned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines in 1998 to make another deployment to Okinawa, Japan.
In April 1999 , he was transferred to Huntsville, Al. to assume the position as Battery K 4th Battalion, 14th Marines 4th Marine Division Field Artillery Chief. In June 2002, he was transferred to Battery S, 5th Battalion 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, at Camp Lejune North Carolina, were he served as Platoon Sergeant for Guns Platoon. SSgt Hearn retired from the Marine Corps in June 2004.
August of the same year he was hired by the Huntsville City Schools system to be employed as the Marine JROTC Instructor at J.O. Johnson High School. June 2016 Johnson High was closed and Ssgt Hearn was hired as one of three Truancy Specialist for the school distric. SSgt Hearn retired from Huntsville City Schools in July 2019.
Ssgt Hearn’s decorations include Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal (second award) , Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (4th award), National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (3rd award), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (6th award), Recruiters Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Kuwait), and Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).
