German-American bass, Malte Roesner, made his first solo appearances as a vocalist as a boy soprano. In university he majored both in musicology and in opera performance and furthered his education with Irwin Gage’s postgraduate lied course. He recently transitioned to bass repertoire after having sung as a baritone.
Mr. Roesner is an alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation and the Richard Wagner Bursary Fund.
In the summer of 2017 he gave his critically acclaimed North American debut in the West Edge Opera production of Vicente Martin y Soler's The Chastity Tree.
From 2005 to 2016, he was a member of the ensemble at the Brunswick National Theater in Germany, where he portrayed more than fifty roles.
In addition to the classic repertoire, he participated in many rediscoveries and world premieres, among others in the opening production for the 14th Munich Biennale for New Music Theater.
In the productions of Jake Heggie’s For a Look or a Touch and Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park Mr. Roesner was not only involved as the male lead, but he also wrote the German translations.
His portrayal of Joe Gillis in the musical Sunset Boulevard, his first major musical role, was highly critically acclaimed in the specialized German press.
Mr. Roesner is an avid lied-singer. For his most recent recital in Oakland, he rediscovered songs by Vienna Classic composers Vicente Martin y Soler, Franz Xaver Süßmayr and others.
In concert, Mr. Roesner has performed a wide range of repertoire, ranging from renaissance music to world premieres.
