With the Oscars just around the corner, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that 19 films have been submitted in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

The number of movies that will move on to the voting stage depends on how many films meet qualifications for Oscar consideration, and not all of them do at the moment. For example, if there is a mixture of live action and animation the filmmakers must prove that at least 75 per cent of the film is animated to qualify. Additionally, it’s required that at least 8 of the films submitted saw their theatrical release in Los Angeles County within the calendar year for this category to be activated at all.

Several of the movies submitted have not seen their theatrical run yet in Los Angeles but there is still time for them to move forward in the Oscar race before the years’ end. If at least 16 of the films submitted qualify, the category will have five nominees after voting is completed. If less than 16 qualify, the number of nominees in this category will drop to 3.

Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category may also qualify for other Academy Awards categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories as well.  As with most years, the submissions this year are varied and include everything from smaller foreign films to big budget studio productions.
