An Empty Profile Is Next to Useless

Yes, an empty profile or website doesn’t do much for anybody, least of all the people who could be learning about you and how you could meet their needs!
An astounding number of voice over professionals using online marketplaces have fallen into a common trap, that is to say that they believe work should just come to them and that minimal effort aside from auditioning needs to take place on their part.
Here’s a bit of a news flash: You need to market yourself!

Many voice over pros are talkers not writers, however writing is one of the most effective ways to get your message across on the Internet and attract prospective customers. Since the Internet is a predominantly visual medium, it rewards people and places for their relevance and authority based upon content… shaped by the written word.

In today’s VOX Daily I am going to share some ideas that will change your experience for the better at Voices.com given some changes are made to your profile.
Whenever a profile review is done at Voices.com, it takes about a half hour or so just to look over all areas of a profile and make relevant, personal recommendations as to how one might add to or improve upon their web presence.

An incomplete profile contributes greatly to a lack of response from clients using the site. From my research, less than 30 minutes of your time updating your profile could make an enormous difference for the better. Profile completeness is very important. You might recall an article from a little while ago on this topic where I explored a number of areas of the utmost importance when presenting yourself online via Voices.com.

What about your profile specifically? I strongly recommend that you double check these 10 areas specifically and see if the recommendations outlined below apply to you:

1. Languages

Are all of the languages and dialects you speak represented? Some people neglect to add dialects and simply select English or Spanish. While that tells us something, it doesn’t say much about which dialects you speak. Are you a North American English speaker? Do you speak Castilian or Latin American Spanish? Big difference, I think you’ll agree. Once you have selected languages or dialects that you can perform but aren’t necessarily reflected in your profile at present, you should be seeing more jobs flow to your email. I expect this will make a humongous difference!

2. Accents

Don’t leave this field empty as it’s a great place to list what accents you can perform. If you have any accents that you can do or specialize in (this could also include character archetypes like the surfer dude, soccer mom, eccentric professor etc.), this is where they should be documented.

3. Education

If you have done any studying with coaches, have graduated from a degree program or have trained in a specific area, you need to fill this out to give people more of an idea of your background. Listing who you’ve studied with can also build confidence in you as a talent and working professional. Remember, you never know who might be visiting your page. What if an agent is scouting for new talent and sees that you’ve studied with a friend of theirs or someone they respect? What you’ve shared could be an ‘in’ with that person.

4. Experience

What we’re really looking for is what you’ve done in the course of your career. This is an opportunity to list prominent jobs you have completed, the kinds of voice over you specialize in and so forth. Again, you never know who could be surveying your profile or who might find you because you were the voice of a campaign they loved but didn’t know the name of the voice over artist.

5. Demos

Demos need to be tagged and described. Did you know that each of your demos has its own page on our site dedicated it? There are lots of opportunities for clients to find specific demos not only via our search engine but via Google, Yahoo! and other engines. Something else to note is that a “Voice Age” need to be associated with demos in order to be found for voice age related searches. This is also more information for someone to see upfront before listening to your demo.

Since audio is not something you can technically “preview” before listening, descriptions and keywords are very important to attract prospective customers, build trust and identify what it is that the listener will hear before they choose to click play. If you’ve taken the steps to upload a demo, you’re already moving in the right direction, however, you may find that there is still some room for additional detail and information to attract visitors to your page.

6. Payment Terms

How do you want clients to pay you? There is a field dedicated to this very subject that is currently empty on your profile. Some talent say that they accept check, PayPal and SurePay as their top 3 payment methods. Just to let you know, Voices.com pays you on behalf of your clients and you can choose whether you prefer to be paid by check or PayPal. Payments are issued on the 1st and 15th of each month save for when those dates fall on a national or statutory holiday in Canada in which case they are issued the next business day.

7. Service Description

What can you do for the client that makes your service offering unique? This field is empty at present and needs to be filled in to achieve profile completeness.

8. Feedback

This section is reserved for adding references from people who have worked with you before as well as a partial client list. If you get hired at Voices.com, this is also where the feedback will appear from clients who complete the project via Voices.com.

9. Your Voices.com Store

Lastly, you have an opportunity to create products for sale that can be featured and listed in the Voices.com Store. Even if you don’t have any products featured, it only takes a few minutes to create one… and once you have created a product, your listing will be featured here:

  1. Thanks, Stephanie……all good information. I must substantiate your info. by saying that as soon as I completed my profile – I mean really completed it – I started getting so many more hits. There are many companies out there looking for voice over artists, and the more information we each provide as to who we are and what we can offer; the more we will be selected for the company to review our profiles.

  2. Hello Stephanie,
    I appreciate the time and thought you have dedicated to this subject. I’ve worked to design what I can offer to clients based on my strengths, rather than trying to be all things to all people. My challenge: in the time I’ve been with Voices.com (coming up on a year now) I have auditioned pretty much on a daily basis, and have been awarded one job. I cannot list any recommendations, as I have none to list (the one client is still working to complete his long-term project, and promises to write one up when he can.) In your experience, at what point does this damage my ability to get work? A potential client may look at my profile, see that I’ve been working at this for a year, and have no ranking or recommendations, and say to themselves, “well, he’s got a nice voice and can speak well, but why hasn’t he gotten any work?”
    I’m somewhat discouraged, but I’m also realistic about how competitive this field is, and that encourages me to improve what I have to offer each day–I would still like to hear your opinion though regarding my particular challenge.

    Thank you for your thoughtful comments and questions. To answer your question, I believe that having at least one testimonial would do wonders for your profile and I encourage you to acquire that as quickly as you can. If this sort of thing matters to a client, they will take the time to look for records of experiences others have had working with you. Even though you may not be finished the job to the point of completion, I’m sure he could provide some kind of an indication of how working with you has been so far. See if he might be willing to write a line or so about your progress with him to date and why he chose you to record.
