Can You Draw A Correlation?

When you decide to audition for a job or record for a client, do you find that the script in question falls in line with what’s on your heart or things that are important to you?
Consider this quote:

“What we love usually manages to get into our conversation. What is down in the well of the heart will come up in the bucket of the speech.” – Vance Havner
This quote, while referring to conversation in general, could also be applied to voice over as the voice over itself is meant to engage people in a conversation of sorts whether around a product, service, concept or otherwise.

Even if you aren’t the author of the words you are reading, you are the author of the voice over being recorded and are expressing those words as if they were your own.

  1. Yes, I believe there is a lot of truth to that observation. When things (words in a script, as well as the purpose of the project) hit home with our own beliefs, they resonate differently than with something that seems unfamiliar or is at odds with how we view something. In some cases, the client can probably tell the difference and in all cases, the voice talent can see & hear it. I especially look forward to any project that arrives in my inbox that matches up to me personally.

  2. Agree; I believe that, with each job for which an artist auditions or performs, if the subject matter dovetails with your own values/beliefs, your best performance will naturally result.
    If the subject matter or message is somewhat far afield from your own belief system, you must decide if you can see past that and offer your best performance. If you are talented enough to offer a top flight performance for a client or subject with which you fundamentally disagree, that is a testament to your acting ability. If you can’t, you need to pass on the job.

  3. I definitely agree. If the scripts you read reflect your heart, a better performance will result. Whether you can relate to it because of a trial you are going through in life or if you can identify with a similar personality trait in the character, you will bring authenticity to the part.

The directorial phrase I noticed most often when I started out was ‘believability.’ I have come to understand that the greatest challenge to our acting capacities is to be believable when the material, well, just isn’t! So of course there’s writing that has us rushing to the mic, heart pounding, and there’s material (ironically the higher paid stuff?) that has us calling for a Coach!
