Based in Sherman Oaks, California Faceware Technologies Inc. (FTI) created an innovative product line to capture even the most subtle facial movements with their groundbreaking markerless 3D facial motion capture solutions some of which were demoed at the SIGGRAPH 2013 conference earlier this year. The Faceware markerless solutions have been used in the production of more than 85 AAA video game titles, feature films, music videos, commercials, television shows, and stage plays.

On October 1st 2013, Faceware Technologies announced new upgrades to its Professional Facial Motion Capture Product Line, a start-to-finish suite of facial mocap tools built to capture, analyze and transfer human emotion into digital facial performances giving an incredibly life-like quality to CG animations, even in the early stages of the process.

“With the downward pressure on production budgets and increasing expectations for more realistic CG, the need to achieve better results earlier in the production process has never been greater,” said Peter Busch, vice president of business development at Faceware Technologies. “With this brand new set of software and hardware, we’re giving animators at every budgetary level the tools to automate the first 60 to 80 percent of the facial mocap process. By helping animators get farther in the process sooner, they can now focus on fine-tuning and adding the subtleties that define character performances.”

Traditional marker based systems use up to 350 markers which are applied to the actors face and track the marker movement with high resolution cameras. This process is cumbersome by comparison and can cause the actors’ expressions to look over exaggerated once the animation is smoothed out.

Markerless technologies like Faceware’s use the features of the face such as nostrils, the corners of the lips and eyes, and wrinkles and then track the desired facial features from frame to frame. This approach also has the ability to track pupil movement, eyelids, and teeth occlusion by the lips and tongue, which is not possible with most computer animated features.

The vision based technology is less cumbersome for all involved in the production, allows the actor to perform with greater expression and creates an incredibly surreal experience for the viewer.

With Faceware Analyzer 2.0, Retargeter 4.0 and improvements to Faceware Headcams the ultimate technology in motion capture technology continues to make waves, blurring the lines between animation and reality.
