Voices.com OpportunitiesMany talent have discovered that they can increase their online visibility, send more traffic to their websites, and reach a wider audience by participating in the voiceover community at Voices.com. A large part of why they do it is because they want to give back to their community, share knowledge, and inspire others. Have you noticed that some people have more visibility at Voices.com than others? If so, there are several ways that you can contribute to your community at Voices.com.
Here’s a short list:
1) Comment on Blog Posts
Commenting on blogs is a very important and surprisingly simple activity. By typing some of your thoughts and sharing them, your voice and opinions are heard, spurring on more conversation and inviting others to partake. You can also get a link to your website for commenting on blogs.

2) Submit an Article
When you send us an article for inclusion on either VOX Daily or Casting Voices, you will be recognized by your colleagues and also gain another link to your website. If you have any articles that you have written, why not share your insight with peers online?

3) Send in Audio Feedback
If you prefer to record your thoughts, you can send in your opinions and comments to be included in the VOX Talk podcast. We record twice a week so there are lots of opportunities for you to be part of this innovative show. VOX Talk covers industry news, business, technology, and has a segment specifically for audio feedback. Just email your voice feedback to media@voices.com.

4) Ask Questions
Ask the Voice Cat and Master VO are blogs that enable you to ask the pros for answers related to the voice industry, your career and technology. Take advantage of decades of experience by asking a question of these gurus. Remember, if you have a question, there’s at least 5 or 6 other people who may be wondering the same thing, so ask away! A link is also provided to your website at Voices.com if your question is published.

5) Produce a Segment for VOX Talk
Become a correspondent for the VOX Talk podcast. As a professional voice talent, you are gifted with a sonorous voice and the ability to use it to your advantage. Many of you also have copywriting experience and are expert creative producers. If journalism interests you or you have a keen desire to contribute to your community with your voice, VOX Talk might just be the perfect outlet for you!
Well, that’s just five ways you can help to nurture and build your community. The sky is the limit.

  1. Has anyone ever discussed how to qualify a lead to see if it might be a good fit for you (as well as worth your time to create a custom demo)? Price might be the only factor you consider, but something that looks juicy may turn out to be something entirely different once you are offered the job.
    When I answer a lead, I want to make a terrific first impression, because it is the only one I am going to get. So I make sure there are no extraneous noises on my custom demo, I spell everything correctly, and I address my note to the person who submitted the lead. Common sense, right?
    Conversely, the person who is submitting a lead should take the time to read back through it for spelling errors, complete information, etc. If I see more than 2 spelling errors in the first sentence of the lead I hit the “Delete” button. If the potential client doesn’t care enough to read through his or her lead for errors, it is probably going to be a job fraught with problems.
    Incomplete information is another factor to consider. If the job is paying $500, but there is no mention of the length, you could be signing up to do an audio book!!! If I answer one of these leads, I don’t specify a price, but give a per-minute rate so I’m covered.
    Sorry to burst some bubbles, but sometimes the potential client will say “sorry price is so low, but there will be other work.” Don’t believe it! In my over 25+ years in this business I have learned that clients are fickle. You can do the best job in the world and you will never hear from that client again. It’s just the way it works.
    If you do take a job for something less than your regular rate because you want it for your demo, it’s an unusual job, or whatever, always do your very best work, regardless of the price. You just never know who is going to hear you!
    I just thought I’d pass along a few things I’ve learned in this wonderful new Internet-based voiceover world. I would love to hear some of your ideas as well.

  2. Making a good impression and toughing it out can be a real good thing!
    In responding to an audition for an automotive spot, the rate was decent for a :30-$150, for a small market, however the client was pretty difficult to deal with!
    Maintaining my composure and realizing this could lead to many more spots per month, I hung in there, and delivered, thru a couple of copy changes and fickle commentary.
    The producer was close to choosing a different vo talent for what he wanted for the car spot.
    A few days later this producer was fired and the new producer loved the spot I cut, within a month we were doing 10-12 spots per month!
    It’s TRUE…..ya never know when you hang in there and deliver the goods!
    Every audition can lead to something BIG!

  3. Why get involved with Voices.com?
    Well I’ll tell you as I’ve had personal experience with Stephanie and the crew and it was long (about 12-18 months ago…) before blogging hit its stride (HA! Shows you have fast things change on the web).
    I was in the Northeast watching all the Hurricane Katrina coverage and was feeling fairly helpless about it. Donating money was easy and I couldn’t take time away from work to go down and help.
    Clearly I was having a mental block because I happened to be doing all this “thinking” while sitting in my voiceover studio!
    I can’t recall which came first…the light bulb over my head or the utterance of “duh!” but I decided that with the advent of internet broadcasts and their fairly limited resources, I would do a PSA for the American Red Cross…long a favorite charity of mine, especially since I’m not very good at giving blood (the heart is willing but the rest of the body becomes uh, a little squishy).
    It took the Red Cross a number of weeks before they were able to turn out any PSA’s for radio stations to download so these PSA would fill a void for the short term and maybe beyond (one never knows).
    Anyway, their web site was chalk full of facts and information about how to donate to the Hurricane Relief effort so I crafted a :60 script, produced it and got it out to a ton of internet station resources.
    Then somehow, and Stephanie may recall better than me (because now with a baby I don’t always have the best recall), Stephanie found out about this American Red Cross PSA and featured it in one of her Podcasts and blanketed the internet with a Press Release about it.
    I doubt she got any new VO members and I don’t think I got any biz out of it either; that wasn’t the goal for either of us. We just did what VO’s have been doing for years…we gave what we could to help a cause we believe in.
    So when YOU get involved with Voices.com, you are not only helping your business, you are gaining a great partner.
    So do what I do… and I do what Stephanie tells me to do.

  5. Excellent article Stephanie! Thanks for all of the suggestions. I do try to leave comments on blog posts (especially at Voices.com), and have sent in audio feedback to a few other podcasts/blogs.
    In 2007, in addition to continuing what I am already doing, I plan to send audio feedback to Voices.com, and look into possibly producing a segment for VOX Talk! 🙂

  6. If you are not a member yet of Voices.com, I hope some of the comments left here are a good reason to see how dedicated this service is to the VO Community. More so than many of the others. Both Stephanie & David are building a heritage and developing ideas that we can all benefit from.
    I believe in this service and hope that each of us finds work on a regular basis.
    If you audition and don’t get the job, don’t be discouraged. It’s great practice. You will win some and lose some. In fact, my advice is to only answer the ones that you truly believe you have a chance of getting. Don’t answer them all. Use the service properly and share as much of yourself as you can and it will come back to you in spades.
    Good luck to everyone as this business continues to evolve. I’m glad I’m on for the ride.

    Helping to support my family and doing so from home is a dream come true!
    I am so blessed, and thankful for the opportunities that Voices.com has brought my way.
    I am having a great time working from my own studio and I don’t have to miss any “mommy” things to make a living!
