Today we’ll explore the voice over performance of presenter Alanis Morissette, Canadian musician and concerned environmentalist.

Global Warming : The Signs and the Science

Hosted and narrated by singer Alanis Morissette, Global Warming : The Signs and the Science (2005), takes viewers across America to meet people from every walk of life who share stories uncovering the reality of climate change. Meet fascinating scientists who work at the edge of climate change and hear about their latest findings, both unsettling and indisputable, proving that global warming is clearly about much more than “just the heat”.

Alanis Morissette’s Voice Over Performance

As a professional singer, Alanis Morissette has a pleasing voice and knows how to phrase, intone and amiably deliver some of the most critical information about our earth and how we can clean up the air we breathe, among other things. Alanis’ empowering voice is persuasive, authoritative and engaging. Her voice makes you want to make a difference.

About Alanis Morissette

A dozen years after the breakthrough debut of Jagged Little Pill, an album which earned four Grammys, sold 30 million records and spawned a dedicated worldwide fan base, Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability.

  1. Well, there are different kinds of singers. There are those who, as Stephanie put it, have a pleasing voice and know how to phrase, intone and amiably deliver lyrics or text; but some of the singers in the “rock and roll era” eschew the classical approach for a more raw sound. Each style may be appropriate for certain kinds of music, but I think Ms. Morissette belongs in the latter category.
Unless her speaking voice is totally unlike the harsh tone she uses on her records, we are tempted to see this as yet another example of a voice actor being chosen for his or her celebrity status, not necessarily storytelling ability. No doubt her name will draw a certain demographic to the program. Those listening for an “amiable delivery” may be disappointed.

  2. Hi Dan,
    Thank you for commenting.
    Have you watched this program?
Not every voice, when speaking, matches it’s singing tone nor does it have to. Tone of voice can also be manipulated and changed to become more subtle or gentler depending on a performer’s placement, for example, head voice VS chest voice. Depending on the intent behind the words, interpretation, breath support and voice placement, the tone can vary dramatically.
You could even throw the pharyngeal voice into the mix and it would be a different sound, too.
I’m interested to hear what people who have watched this program thought of Alanis’ performance. Does anyone have something to add to this?
    Best regards,

  3. The myth of anthropogenic Gore-bull warming is just that–a myth. The science demonstrating it is alarmist propaganda is indisputable. Alkanis Morissette, as have many, has been duped.

  4. Hi Larry,
    Thank you for commenting.
Could you prove otherwise? Just curious to see if there is accepted scientific evidence that points to the contrary.
    Best wishes,

  5. Stephanie,
No, I haven’t even seen a promo for the show – maybe PBS is waiting until this hemisphere’s coldest winter in a century is over.
I can’t say for certain that the global temperature isn’t warming (it is certainly either warming or cooling), or that man doesn’t have some part in that. But the possibility of humans incinerating the atmosphere is less frightening than the way some are using “science” to push a political agenda. Science is not a set of dogmas; it is merely a method of investigation. At any given moment, the view of the majority of scientists is likely to be wrong. Gravity pulls – no gravity pushes; the speed of light is constant – no, the speed is variable; the smallest thing is the atom – no, the electron – no, the quark – no, superstring energy…. Yesterday’s scientific “fact” is today’s childish joke. Misusing “science” as an endorsement of political power is grotesque and abominable.
A certain German leader of the last century relied on contemporary science when he tried to advance humanity by eliminating less-evolved races. This is what science in the service of politics looks like. In our century, the “solution” demanded to the “problem” of Global Warming is to impoverish and shorten the lives of hundreds of millions of formerly free people – in the name of Science. The most inconvenient truth of all is that the proposed solution lines up very conveniently with the goals that many of its proponents have held all along.
As Manhattan Project scientist Richard Feynman said, “Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.”

  6. Hi Dan,
Thank you for your follow up comment. The show aired in 2005. I was asking if you saw the show itself regarding Alanis’ performance.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
    Best wishes,

  7. Hi, Steph. To answer the question you posed to Larry, if you’ll do a search for “global warming hoax” you’ll see material on alternative views.
    All the best.
