Have you ever looked at something on the surface only to realize that once you dug a bit deeper, there was more to it than you imagined?
Upon that discovery, clarity comes and your eyes are opened to the realities before you, which may be contrary to your initial perception.
Maybe you’ve told yourself that it’s all the same only to discover that it’s clearly not.
Find out how this relates to voice over in today’s VOX Daily.
The Power of Expectations
Just last night I went over a couple of movie selections with David, both of which were somewhat similar in content, time period and so on. I had the expectation that we’d be watching one of the two movies. David popped the DVD into the player. When it came time to watch the film, even after seeing the opening, I honestly thought I was watching the movie I had in mind. It wasn’t until about five minutes into the film when Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner turned up that I realized I wasn’t watching what I thought I was but Robin Hood Prince of Thieves instead!
See how powerful an expectation can be and also how it can affect our judgment?
This kind of thing can happen to us in all kinds of different ways. It all starts with an expectation, you know, what you think will happen or how you perceive something to be… even if the perception is based upon unfounded information, bias or the temporary blindness of ignorance before we truly see something for what it is.
Unless we adjust our sight and look with clearer vision, we are unable to see things as they actually are.
How This Relates to the Voice Over Marketplace
One example of this that I can think of is when people ask us what the differences between Voices.com and voice123 are. Many people assume that we are two very similar companies and as a result decide to lump our companies together.
We are very different companies and offer different services to our customers. Although many are quite obvious, some of the subtler differences are only apparent once you’re using the Voices.com site fully.
While Voices.com has been in business for a long time and there are many resources on the site and on the web for people to discover and deduce for themselves, it is still a common enough question that I got to thinking about it in a different way.
Firsthand Experience is Key
Generally, the people who ask how we differ from our competitors have not used Voices.com before in the manner they may have used the competing site. Even if the talent has a Guest account with us, they may not have fully explored how the service works.
In addition, they may not have made contact with our customer service representatives or participated in the voice over community at Voices.com.
If you’re reading this, you’ve likely already subscribed to blogs like VOX Daily and podcasts such as Voice Over Experts. Maybe you’ve been on our webinars, attended a social gathering we were at or had a great experience using the site.
You may even be participating in Voices.com groups via social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to name a few.
If you’re really up on what we’re doing, you are aware of what goes on in the office on a daily basis, read about any press coverage we’ve received or are connected to me or some of our staff members on Facebook or Skype.
The deeper the relationship, the greater your understanding and appreciation of who we are, what we can do for you and how we differ from other companies in this space. Likewise, the more we know you, the greater our ability to serve you and help you achieve your goals.
When you engage or are engaged, you get to know people better and can understand and appreciate how they are able to work with you and be part of your life. This translates across the board.
Too often in life we pass judgment without having any ground to stand upon, looking at the world through a pair of glasses, perhaps a prescription, shaped by an experience we had before, whether good or bad. In such cases we apply preconceived thoughts, feelings or notions and often find out after the fact that we were mistaken.
