Share how you unwind or reward yourself after a long day in front of the mic with your friends at VOX Daily.

Voice recording demands a certain amount of give and take where your own comfort and wants are concerned.
For instance, you might have to hold off on having that warm cup of cocoa or forfeit particular foods for the sake of your throat or to minimize mouth noise. When I am done recording as host of the VOX Talk podcast on Monday and Wednesday evenings, I treat myself to some some potato chips and a glass of pop (Monday’s only to watch “24”) or perhaps depending on my mood, a caffeinated tea (Orange Pekoe).

There’s an example for you, but keep in mind that my recording schedule is not nearly as frequent or packed as yours is. If I am thrilled to indulge after two half hour recording sessions a week, you must find your free time away from the microphone even more precious 🙂 Do you strategically plan your menus around your recording schedule and save the best for last?

Perhaps you do something completely different with your post session time that doesn’t involve food or drink but still signifies the end of a long day of work.

  1. As much as I love doing VO, it’s great to shut down the computer/email, and call it a day. Then I like to spend time with my wife, have dinner, go out, or watch some TV. For food – I go for milk and Oreos, since milk is off limits during the day. I’ve tried it a few times at lunch, only to regret it at the mic.

    It’s funny- I was thinking today about writing a blog very similar to this one! Great minds think alike 🙂
    After a very long or grueling session- I reward myself by NOT SPEAKING for a while! Some of the sessions I do go all day and are hard on my voice. So, I come home- watch TV, relax, and try to get my husband not to ask too many questions! Hah!
    If it’s a shorter session at home, the first thing I always want to do is hit the gardens. Nothing relaxes me more than digging in the dirt or harvesting a crop.
    Finally, if it’s been a long week- I really treat myself with a professional massage. For my 30th birthday, my hubby got me a year membership at a local spa… yup, I’m spoiled rotten 🙂

  3. I plan my major breaks: Lunch around 11:30 or Noon, that’s usually when there’s a break in the action in the central and eastern time zones.
    Dinner, usually around 6:30 or 7p.m. and then come back to the studio around 7:30 or 8 and check for last minute messages, then if scripts can wait for the next day, I shut down the computer and relax with my family.
    Now that spring is near I usually love watching some of the pre-season baseball on television to relax, or some of the College basketball March Madness!

  4. I don’t follow any particular routine, except that I have become so attuned to my body’s needs, I just “listen”, and it directs me. Lately, I’ve found that after recording, I enjoy taking a physical break, and go to the gym, swim or take a walk before dinner. On Fridays, I celebrate the end of the work week and start of the weekend with a cocktail or glass of wine.

  5. After recording, I’m actually pretty jazzed. Getting into the correct mental/emotional state is powerful stuff. I tend to eat comfort foods that I have been abstaining from for fear of its effect on my performance.
    Sometimes I even exercise to burn off energy – that is if I didn’t work out before. Some of my best performances have been post exercise – gets the body revved.

    “My God this is a nice Merlot!”
    That’s my idea of a nice night after writing clever copy that the client always wants to change, voicing with my dog helping with his voice and finally putting a product out that you want the whole world to hear. AHHH a nice night of cooking a fab meal and a nice glass or two of wine. “this is a great merlot”

  8. I try hard to get a good nights sleep and sleep in until 8AM. Then, newspaper, TV news and then into the shower at 9:30. Into the studio @ 10. Lunch break about 11:30 if I have a client to meet or feel like getting out of the house for an hour. Otherwise, I break for lunch about 1:00. Back for the afternoon rush till about 6:30-7PM. TV news and/or Jeopardy, then dinner & a walk with my wife. (before or after dinner) I check my email for any last minute prep for the following day and hope I don’t find a “Can’t wait” order in my Inbox. Due to the clients I have overseas, I try hard to be available, if I can, due to the time zones. Otherwise, TV till 11PM news which I listen to while getting ready for bed. Most TV geared to drama & adventure with “24” at the TOP of my list.
    My mind numbing time is usually spent working on my newsletter or getting into a good movie on DVD. Therapy ya know.

  9. The toughest part is “ending the day!”
    Since my studio is attached to my home, its hard to stop working. I try to cut off work at 6pm. A Cuba Libre (rum & coke) is in order and dinner with the family. Then I have the nasty habit of checking my email after dinner. Since I have clients around the globe, I often find someone in the South Pacific or Asia starting their day and needing a track in a hurry… or someone burning the midnight oil in this hemisphere. Keeping the customer satisfied is number one… and I have a hard time saying no.
    One of my solutions is to make a point of leaving the house from time to time without a cell phone and access to emails. We all need a break every once in a while. I think I’ll take up Jason’s suggestion of Oreos and Milk.
    Is that on the South Beach Diet?

  10. The great thing about running your own business is that you get to pick your own hours. You can pick whatever 100 hours a week you want!
    Watching a hockey game and TV do it for me!

  11. When I first started in this business, I used to reward myself with a nice home-cooked meal or other small treat after every gig, kind of as a pat on the back for a job well done. Now that I am working on a regular basis, I just make sure to give myself time to unwind (watch a good movie), like Kara I rest my voice if I’ve been talking a lot all day and I give myself the weekends off. If I get a particularly prestigious gig, I may treat myself to an extra day off 🙂 I figure I’ve earned it.

  12. After work I like to relax in front of the TV for awhile – and not talk too much. It’s a good idea to eat some comfort foods to wind your body down and maybe include some milk.
