Do you remember the homeless man “with the Golden Voice?”

Ted Williams, a former radio personality and military veteran, made headlines everywhere in 2011 after being interviewed in a brief video for The Columbus Dispatch about the unique sign he carried which read, “I have a God given gift of voice, I am an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times.. Please! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless you. Happy holidays.”

Not your typical sign. And never mind homelessness; this is not your typical man. After the interview was posted to YouTube it went viral and with his charismatic good humour and smooth voice just about every voice-over business and producer in the industry wanted to help him get off the streets.

During whirlwind media coverage he was helped off the streets, given a home, a voice-over studio, and became the vocal ambassador for numerous brands including Kraft Foods, MSNBC, the Cleveland Cavaliers (who later retracted their offer after details of his life on the streets surfaced) and many more.

Williams cleaned up his act and is now a working voice-over artist. He also advocates on behalf of the homeless and is on a mission to eradicate homelessness with his not-for-profit organization “The Ted Williams Project.” He frequently speaks at events to raise awareness and funds to help support the homeless and provide necessities to homeless shelters.

Recently he narrated the documentary film “Houseless,” released by Moto Entertainment earlier this month.  The film closely follows the lives of Pirate, Professor, Clyde, Cliff, and Carm; once successful men, who lost it all. From the breathtaking scenery of Isla Vista, California, viewers will travel into the heart of darkness. It is a gritty, in-depth look at the reality homeless people face on a daily basis.

Moto Entertainment is a film production company founded by former Marine Corps Drill Instructor Michael Nichols who produced Houseless. The film is distributed by Allegro Media Group and is available for purchase in stores nationwide and at the official Houseless website.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to nonprofit organizations that help the homeless community by supporting outreach programs and shelters. To viewers Williams says, “I don’t ever want to end up on the side of a highway again. And by you guys purchasing this film, you are helping me to help others.”

Executive Producer Chris Manhattan, himself a military veteran, explained why he spearheaded the film. “The purpose of this film was to discover why and how people like the Pirate, Professor, Clydesdale and Cliff end up homeless living in a park — with no food, no family, no home, no hope, and no future.”

In a video message from the film’s website Williams explains, “My heart is very dear to homeless. I was homeless for 17 years and I know what it’s like, I’ve walked in their shoes. And now I want to give back. And this is the best way I can, to narrate pieces, to give financial help as well. Any way that I can help the homeless, they got my help.”
