Podcasts for Creativity, Innovation and Emotional Intelligence

Luckily, podcasts are a prolific source of creativity and innovation that helps to keep burnout away. These shows bring a valuable community straight into an on-demand environment. Without needing to leave your office, you can glean valuable tips and tricks from some of the best storytellers and business people in the world.

Plus, several notable podcasts also touch on subjects related to developing emotional intelligence and understanding how others ‘work.’ Considering that creative industries often hinge on whether or not teams can successfully collaborate, EQ is a topic that should not be ignored!

Voices Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer Shares Her Top Picks

As the Voices Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer, Stephanie Ciccarelli has to wear an entrepreneurial and creative hat at all times.

Over the years, podcasts have served as a way for her to stay inspired and current. In fact, she’s worked on both sides of the podcasting industry, both as a host and as an avid listener.

“I like actionable tips,” she says. “It’s important to stress what people can do right now. And I also like anecdotes and examples that are pulled straight from real life. When people are authentic and open, and comfortable talking about their experiences, they make those lessons of value to others too. It’s like receiving a little gift that you can apply to your life immediately.”

“A good podcast should add value to your life and engage you. It should relate to you,” Stephanie adds. “It shouldn’t just be something that you listen to because you think you should. Engaging content makes you want to tune in – and the host is a very important part of that engagement. If you can connect to them as a real and authentic person, all the better.”

Stephanie’s Notes: Personality hacker is great because I love learning about people, especially how they behave and the psychology behind it. 3. HBR Ideacast

Stephanie’s notes: The HBR Ideacast is a different format than the others: they bring on professors and researchers. What they do with the show format is also neat, because the podcast and the Harvard Business Review content online mirrors one another. As someone who has also strategically produced content, it’s easy to see that HBR Ideacast is part of a much larger strategy.

Stephanie’s Notes: StoryBrand is is often focused on looking at how you might interact with your customer or team. The stories they dive into are about engaging with the content or your audience and the subject matter is usually relational. This podcast really speaks to me as I’m a highly relational person. I care about people, and learning about them is what draws me in.

Storytelling is ultimately about a relationship: it’s about you and an audience. One of the main lessons that StoryBrand has imparted on me is that storytelling is focused on making your customer the hero, while your brand becomes the guide. Together, you’re all working towards the same goal and purpose.

Why Podcasts Are Important for Creativity

Any business can be ‘creative,’ from manufacturers looking to find new solutions to productivity and process, to graphic designers who are tapping into trendy color palettes and photo treatments. Every business can benefit from the exercise of widening their view of the world.

Podcasts are a great way to ‘open’ up the world, with access to thousands of different viewpoints and subjects.

“It’s important not to isolate yourself,” Stephanie says. “For instance, it can be tempting to shut out voices you don’t want to hear or views that you don’t hold. However, if you make space for consideration and entertaining different points of view, that is where you may find common ground. All of these different angles and facets can open your world.”

“In our day to day lives, we probably don’t come across as many different sorts of people as easily as we can through podcasts. Not everyone can go out, during their workday, to meet someone different from themselves.”

New Content Takes Up Little Real Estate, but Keeps You Sharp

“Podcasts definitely keep you sharp,” Stephanie admits. “I don’t know how many episodes or speakers I’ve referenced, along with books I’ve read, but it’s definitely helped to build creative muscle.”

“Taking time to listen to new content has literally earned some new people a place in my mind, or mental real estate – as well as in my phone storage!” she says. “However, it’s a small price to pay for the value that they’ve added, like giving me ideas for future guests on our podcast, and exposing me to new ideas.”

“I thrive on things that are new. I really like to learn something different and these people are doing the work to source, produce and deliver that content to me for free. Being a listener helps me along my journey as a ‘student,’ who is constantly learning. As a bonus, there is no formal testing associated with this kind of learning. I listen when I can and synthesize it into my own life.”

    Hello!

Crazy question…in the US, radio talent use allaccess.com to search for radio jobs.
Where might Canadian radio jobs be found online?

    Thanks for your help 🙂

      Hi Catherine,
      Great question!
I’m not sure if you mean VO jobs or radio jobs in general?
Of course, Voices.com is a great source for VO jobs (we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that!), however, for other positions, you may wish to look at:
      – Shold Media Group
      As well as:
      – Media Job Search Canada
      – Milkman Unlimited
Note: We’re not affiliated with any of the above, but we have heard of them as sources of job postings. Hope that helps & best of luck!

As a buiz owner I find the “tell you what to do” shows tiring. What interests me is real stories about surviving the entrepreneurial landscape. Gimlet’s Startup, Andrew Warner’s Mixergy, and Jerry’s Colona’s Reboot Podcats are great. But if you’re a fan of cinematic audio storytelling there’s not much to choose from.
Seeing this problem I decided to create a show to fill the gap. I’m a therapist whom launched a media company, so I’ve got the skill set to deep dive the hearts and minds behind inspired ventures. So I seek out the weird kids now adults redefining success and happiness. I explore their wipeouts and recoveries. Interviews + audio cinema – problem solved.

If interested you can find The Pioneers of Insight Podcast on iTunes and everywhere else.

    Thanks for the great article!
