A voice over provides the user with a more personalized experience, helping them relate to the product or brand on a deeper level. This can be a serious advantage over the competition making your brand more memorable.
Using audio to instruct a consumer on how to take advantage of the service accompanied by a video slide show is a popular way in which many digital media technologies use voice overs. This will also help the company brand itself with a personality which is important when the customer is not met face-to-face with the service provider. An interesting and charismatic voice over will help the company project a lasting image in the minds of the users who are therefore more likely to return.

  1. I did a read recently that talked you through tying a tie. The idea being that you can start the iPhone App and follow through the process without needing to operate buttons as you use voice commands to move from step to step. Quite an interesting one I thought!

  2. A very timely article–I’ve just completed an iPhone app project with over 200 individual files in addition to the video game characters that I voice. The new digital media formats have made us all truly global in that opportunity abounds in many more areas–geographically and professionally.

  3. Voicing an internet video ad for Zagg was my initiation into digital media. The brief was to instill the character of Inadequate Ingrid (I am a baritone male!) into an inanimate iPad accessory. I might have fled, but the witty script made it fun to do. Actually, thanks for your topic because it activates creative thinking along the lines of “I am a tree”, which no doubt helps to build capacity for Character work.

  4. Yes, voice overs are a vital part of the brand experience.
    BMW for example wanted to do some commercials in the UK. Through testing they realized that their original voice over personality was part of the BMW brand.
    I think all of the touch points that you mentioned Lin are great starting points. For companies wanting to develop their brand in terms of how they sound creating a consistent voice within all of its customer facing touch points is a great start.

  5. That Zagg ‘Ingrid’ video got an Addy Gold, I learned this year. Couldn’t wish for a better initiation, particularly since the producer took the trouble to personally acknowledge the contribution of voice. Maybe we could build a VO branding campaign: “A word is worth a thousand pictures…”
