We’re working on the third generation of the Voices.com website! Want in?

In the beginning we were InteractiveVoices.com, then, we became Voices.com, and now we’re ready (with your help!) to take the Voices.com website to the next level.
We have lots of plans in place for the new website, making it exponentially better, to the power of three!
Since we’re on the subject of metamorphosis, let’s take a look at how the face of our company has changed over the past three years.
Remember the first InteractiveVoices.com home page? Wow, that’s really taking a step back in time! Here’s a glimpse from March 2005.

Suffice to say ladies and gents, we’ve brought this website a long way in a short period of time, but I want to let you know that we didn’t do it by ourselves. You helped build this! And now, you can help shape the 3rd Generation of Voices.com.

  1. Stephanie,
    It would be nice if the list of available auditions was filtered to match our profiles and preferences. At least for me, I still see a lot of listings asking for only a woman’s voice. (That’s something I’m just not going to be able to pull off.)
    And listings for other languages are also often there. It’s not a big deal to delete them, but it would be nice not to have to do so.
    I’ll write again if I have any other suggestions.

  2. I’ve been along for the ride since 2005 too and have really enjoyed getting to know Stephanie, David, Laurynda and the crew. You all have gone above & beyond what I’ve seen in other online services and it’s most appreciated.
    I echo the language filter as Bob pointed out too. Additionally, I’d like to see a breakdown for the rate quote in the audition form to reflect a per page or per minute or per character, etc., when you must quote a price.
    I’ve also found that some clients don’t give you all the info in order to base your rate on a full understanding of what they want you to do. Such as: how much copy do you really want me to quote on? What’s your real budget?
    You guys are wonderful. Take it to the next step. I’ll continue to tag along.

  3. I’d like to see a requirement that clients leave leads open till the end date if they want a custom audition.
    Help clients understand that it takes time to do a custom, and our time should be respected by allowing us a chance to do the audition before it’s closed.
    Many times I’ve gone to the trouble to voice a custom, only to find that when I went to upload, the lead was closed. They might find a better talent if they give us a chance. Some of us are busy voicing jobs and can’t do it immediately! The first to respond usually isn’t the best!

  4. I totally agree with Bob Souer. To be frank, your filtering system is considerably behind that of competitive sites, they manage to remove female/foreign language postings without a problem. And I would personally add a plea to persuade you to (politely of course) force posters to select between English/North American and English/British accents.
    I have replied to many ‘non-qualified’ English posts where I think a UK accent would work – with no success – and I’m beginning to feel I am wasting my time if the poster would never consider a UK accent.
    It would also help me to decide (as a UK talent) if Voices.com is the right site for me to subscribe to. If you think I should only respond to British accent postings, then 1 post in the 4 weeks I have been a subscriber is not very encouraging!

  5. I have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: I would like to see how many talents have responded to an audition. A truth about this form of work is that generally the client is going to find BUwhat they need in the first 75-100 auditions. If there are more I won’t bother responding.
    I would also like it made clear whether a custom demo is required.
    And finally: some kind of running stats page of what jobs got were won with what budget. not the clients or voices, just the type of read it was and how much the winning bid was.
    Now there is a school of thought that says this will only encourage a race to the bottom as we all under bid one another, and I say that’s C**P! I’ve heard it and don’t believe it.
    All it will do is facilitate the ability of talents to price themselves in a reasonable way and let their talent win the gig.
    If you are bidding way too low you look like your giving it away and that begs the question of Why? If you are bidding in the stratosphere because you don’t know any better you’ll never be considered.

    Thank you for your comment – a little while ago, we made it so that clients could not close their job postings manually from within their accounts.
    They can however request that a job is closed and Carol will do it on their behalf.
    I trust that this change has and will continue to make a difference for submitting custom demos 🙂

  7. Hi folks,
    1) Web stats, as outlined by Gordon Brooks.
    2) Show everyone who wins what. Harsh reality: way too many people chasing too few jobs.
    Talented folks with excellent equipment win the worthwhile jobs; beginners or people with substandard equipment, don’t.
    3) Screen job postings clearly not applicable (female request sent to male, etc.)
    4) Limit the number of responses per job. Few clients will listen beyond 50 demos to fill a $200 job. I sure don’t when I hire. Too much to do. You’d feel the same.
    5) Actually indicate if an audition is HEARD. Most beyond #50 aren’t, I’m guessing. Refute this if you like but, without data, we’re both blowing smoke. So, provide the data.
    Please make these significant improvements. The beginners will lose interest and not renew, probably; talented folks will win business…and the clients benefit by not having to waste their time.

    As a UK voiceover, I could not agree more with Tony. As a professional, UK voiceover I could not agree more with Bill and Gordon.
    All make very valid suggestions which I fully endorse.
    As full time vo’s, time is of the essence. To be perfectly honest, I have had a number of takes from Voices.com but nothing to get really excited about. Maybe I’m auditioning too late (but I’m busy!), maybe I’m pricing too high or maybe they really don’t want a UK voice…I don’t know and it would be nice to know.
    I also find the quote box too limiting – it does not allow you to put a range of any kind and , call me a cynic, but I am sure that there are (far too) many talent seekers who look first at the price and then listen to the voice only if the price is right. It’s sad but it’s life.
    I am not giving up yet – ever the optimist – I get so much work from other sources/sites, that I know I can deliver the goods but I do get fed up when precious time is wasted.
    I’m aware that this sounds rather negative – it is not intended to be. We have chosen to work in a cut throat industry and we must learn to live with all the downsides, but I do think there is quite a lot more you at Voices.com could do to raise the levels.
    You appear to be willing to listen to us and that is wonderful. Time will surely tell if we are taken seriously.

    I’ve very much enjoyed the site in the time I have been here- I can’t wait to see where it goes next!
    My only suggestion would be for the clients to give more details about the job I am quoting for. I’ve quoted for one thing only to find out later it is a much larger project, or slightly different than I originally understood. It’s all in the details, and I love details!

  10. I still think that anyone who wants a custom demo for their project should have a minimum budget listed of anywhere from $300-$500. Whatever that minimum, any client below that can only get a generic demo.
    Power Ranked as the oldest, lowest rated and least favorite of ANY voice over on voices.com (how’s THAT for exclusivity 🙂

  11. I actually got my first job through voices.com the other day, and I’m a UK voice. But it was a bit specific – a Sean Connery impression.
    I wonder how much the clients are looking for or even using UK voices at all. It would be nice if there was some feedback. Thinking about it, I might ask the people who booked me how much they use the site, and how many people they listened to.
