In turn, that information can be used directly or sold for someone else's use. After such information falls into the wrong hands, it becomes difficult and expensive to undo the harm. Often the theft goes unnoticed until the victim attempts to obtain alone or receives a collection notice on an unfamiliar debt. Sometimes victims discover their identity thief has amassed huge debts in the victim's name, literally crushing the victims Future of buying power and possibly even damaging user her personal or professional reputation. In this scenario, Lucy is shocked when she applies for a job at a local bank, and her background check reveals tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt and to luxury car loans in default. Although the thief or thieves used an old address of Lucy's because they had her birthdate and Social Security number, the actions were on her credit report. Lucy had not been receiving notices of the debts because of the incorrect address. On further investigation, Lucy discovered that the thieves had built an entire web of deception in her name. They had opened multiple charge accounts and run up the totals, brought cars and quit paying on them and even set up bank accounts, apartments and secure jumps, all with Lucy's information. Lucy was devastated. Her credit and reputation were in shambles. She had to take action immediately.
