Alan Johnson. Narrator This is from a walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks. It wasn't just the way Jamie looked that made her different. It was also the way she acted. Jamie didn't spend any time hanging out at sea, Sal's Diner going to slumber parties with other girls, and I knew for a fact that she never had a boyfriend in her entire life. Old Hebert, her minister father, would probably have had a heart attack if she had. Jamie carried her Bible with her wherever she went, and if her looks and Hebert didn't keep the boys away, the Bible Syratech did. I was thinking about all this while Jamie stood in front of us on the first day of drama class, and I admit I wasn't much interested in seeing her. But strangely, when Jamie turned to face us, I kind of got a shock. Like I was sitting on a loose wire or something. He wore a plaid skirt with a white blouse under the same brown cardigan sweater I'd seen a 1,000,000 times. But there were two new bumps on her chest that the sweater couldn't hide. That I swore hadn't been there. Just three months earlier. She never worn makeup, and she still didn't. But she had a tan, and for the first time she looked, well, almost pretty. Of course, I dismissed that thought right away. But as she looked around the room, she stopped and smiled right at me. Obviously glad to see that I was in the class. It wasn't until later that I would learn the reason why this is from all the flowers. Air Dying by Lawrence Block When I got there, Joe Durkin was already holding down a corner table, working on a drink. I took in the Roman listen to the hum of a conversation at the bar, and I guess some of what I was feeling must have found its way to my face because the first thing Joe asked me was if I was all right. I said it was fine. And why? Because you look like you saw a ghost. He said, Be funny if I didn't. I said, the room is full of them. A little new for ghosts, isn't it? How long they've been open two years closer to three time flies, he said. Jakes Place. Whoever Jake is, you got a history with him. I don't know who he is. I only knew Jimmy. He died, didn't a yes. He left the place to a nephew who tried running it for a few months and then got rid of it. So I guess he sold it to Jake. Whoever Jake is, whoever Jake is, he said, he puts a good meal on the table. You know what they got here? You can get an Irish breakfast all day long. What's that? A cigarette in a six pack? This is from Unbroken, By Laura Hillenbrand. One morning out in the prison compound, the bird saw on the ground a thick, heavy wooden being some six feet long. Pick it up, the birds said. With some effort. Louis hoisted it up, and the bird ordered him to lift it high and hold it directly over his head. Louis heaved the beam up. Several minutes passed. Louis stood eyes on the bird. The beam felt heavier and heavier, the pain more intense. The bird watched Louis, amused by his suffering five more minutes past, then 10 he felt his contras and slipping his mind, losing adhesion until all he knew was a single thought. he cannot break me. Then there was a flurry of motion. The bird was leaping down from the roof and charging toward him. The birds fist rammed into Louise stomach, and Louis folded over in agony. The beam dropped, striking Louise head. He flopped to the ground when he woke, he didn't know where he was or what had happened, and had no idea how long he'd stood there. But another prisoner had looked at the clock. When Louis had fallen, Louis had held that beam aloft for 37 minutes.
