Dr Clean was introduced because motor vehicles are a major domestic source of smog and several other toxic contaminants. From 1999 through 2010 the drive clean program for light duty vehicles reduced smog causing emissions by an estimated 335,000 tons during the same period. It also reduced emissions of carbon monoxide by about 3.18 million tons and carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, by more than 296,000 tons every year. The heavy duty vehicle portion of the program reduces particulate matter by about 200 tons from 2000 through 2010. The program reduced emissions of particulate matter by an estimated 2700 tons in 2010 alone. Drive clean prevented 34,600 tons of smog causing pollutants from being released into the air. By comparison, Ontario's coal fired generating plants emitted over 58,000 tons of smog causing pollutants when operating at their peak in 2003.
