you're listening to Mike Jones and we're here today to discuss why organisations need to dear to the disability equality duty. The way with me in the studio is Tony Reed from the disability job site. Of course, the Disability job site began operating in May 2000. All right, we are totally committed to assisting companies who wish to actively recruit people with disabilities to I see. So does this work alongside government legislation? That's correct. Mike Disability Equality Duty. The D E. D became law on December the 4th 2006 as part of the Disability Discrimination Act. Okay, the legislation means organisations are now legally obliged to promote equal opportunities for the 10 million disabled people in the United Kingdom. Right? So how many organisations does this cover? Tony? The Disability Right Commission. The DRC covers 45,000 public bodies across the country to ensure adherence to the promotion of equality for disabled people. OK, so that's a very broad reaching initiative, then one of the key elements of the D D. Well, the most important, if not fundamental, element of the DVDs to promote equal opportunities for disabled people. I see we endeavour to eliminate unlawful disability discrimination on disability related harassment on promote positive attitudes toward disabled people. So how does an organisation go about a dearing to the legislation? It's quite straightforward really. Organisations must produce a disability equality scheme a d s which outlines how they will implement the duty to promote equality for disabled people. Basically, in order to fulfil the duty, equal opportunity must be given to disabled persons. Otherwise legal action can be taken Okay, so disabled workers share the same general employment rights as other workers. Yes, absolutely right. There are also some special provisions under the Disability Discrimination Act that idea under the DD a legislation It is unlawful for employers to discriminate against disabled people for a reason related to their disability in all aspects of employment, unless this can be justified. So what does that include? Basically, the law comes into effect regarding application forms and interview arrangements, proficiency tests and job office. I see Onda also with terms of employment promotion and transfer or training opportunities, work related benefits such as access to recreation or refreshment facilities on dismissal and redundancy. Pretty much every aspect of employment When applying for the job, having the interview on, then starting work and building a career. What size is an organisation have to be to comply before October 2000 for the act only applied to employers with 15 or more staff. Now employers with fewer than 15 staff are also included.
