no. Ow! Cooper, school teacher at Cool Springs Eyewitness Account of the earthquake in 18 86 about 10 p.m. I was awakened by a terrible noise. The house seemed to be breaking up. It was cracking and twisting and moving up and down. The noise sounded like the earth bellowing and mighty pain. All of us jumped out of bed and ran out on the porch. Another great roar, like thunder underground than a movement of the earth, made us dumb with fear. The oaks in the yard were swaying back and forth. I figured the earth would open up and swallow us. It was a moonlight night. The fleeting clouds and moon added to the terror. We began to hear folks crying, shouting and praying. Tremor after tremor followed, rocking the house and swaying the trees.
