In 2006 a new statute for the Self Government of Catalonia was approved within the Spanish state, this being the third such statute in Catalonia's history. However, despite being passed by the Catalan and Spanish parliaments and confirmed in a referendum, this new law was then contested in the Constitutional Court by the right wing People's Party on other Spanish institutions. In the following years, the Catalans awaited the court sentence with a growing sense of frustration. On the 13th of September 2009 the inhabitants of the village of Rennes, Dimon held a ballot on independence with support of the local council. While not legally binding, it was organised in accordance with proper electoral procedures and generated considerable interest.
