Hello. The exhibition in this room outlines the origins and development of Peterborough Cathedral. Listen for a few minutes, and I'll give you the highlights of that extraordinary storey we start in the year 655. When paid, a thie Anglo Saxon king of Mercia founded the first Abby here. Sadly, little trace of it now remains, but there is a surprising survivor on display in this room. A small glass bowl, which was found in a stone coffin. It was probably used to hold oil for the ceremonies of baptism or last rites. Another surviving fragments of the first Abby is a finely carved grave marker known as the head of stone, which you can see in the cathedral. It provides a glimpse of the richness of the abbey's artistic reputation at the time.
