on July 16th 1907 Famed popcorn pioneer Orville Clarence Rettenbach was born in Brazil, Indiana, and he is the subject of this month's in history. Growing up on a small farm, Orville Redenbacher enjoyed participating in his local for each chapter leader. As a student at Purdue University, he became fascinated by agronomy, and upon graduation he ran a successful fertilizer company. He soon devoted his free time, however, to developing the perfect popping corn. In the early 19 seventies, Red and Barker and a partner named Charlie Bowman created a hybrid corn they initially called Red Bow. When they later decided to use the name Orville Redenbacher Popcorn, a brand was born that would gain worldwide fame. Reading Boxers Journey took him from selling kernels from the trunk of his car to becoming a pop culture icon, no pun intended through his TV commercials. His distinct style of dress, featuring horn rimmed glasses and a bowtie, became his trademark. Red and Bacher died in 1995 but his legacy continues. Besides the popcorn that bears his name, the annual Valparaiso Popcorn Festival, which began in 1979 continues to this day in honor of his achievements. It takes place every first Saturday after Labor Day, be sure to check back next month and every month for more in history.
