Mari Morrison. It's difficult to protect an idea from being stolen. Generally speaking, ideas are not themselves protected by copyright laws, and other legal claims involving the theft of ideas are difficult to prove. Novelist John Gardner, October Light the Sunlight Dialogues. Grendel once remarked that he was always relieved when someone stole an idea from him. Then I don't have to live with the damn thing the rest of my life. He told us about a film that he had snuck into a theatre to see many years before. It was about a giant alligator hunting a swamp in Louisiana. When I walked out of that theatre, he said, I thanked God that someone had stolen my idea. It was so bad. I knew I had been spared the humiliation God had been protecting my career. Gardner claimed that his chief protection against theft was his own speed and ambition. He didn't know what to do with them and didn't mind having one or another of them adopted or even kidnapped. Caution is always a good idea in the entertainment business. They have plenty of money and make more by paying for storeys, which they do gladly and readily when they find one they like. No one except attorneys, likes litigation.
