there was a cold January morning. 7 a.m. Rush hour in the D. C. Metro. Is the commuters filed? A young man with the violin case in the $4 million violin was about to put on one of the greatest free performances of all time on Lee, not the legal secretary scrambling to the national law library. Not the Harry mom taking her babies to the dentist, not the gray haired lobbyist who, just three nights before paid $1000 for four tickets to see the same performer showing Boston. Sadly, not even the private school music teacher waiting for the connector to Georgetown. After all, who pays attention to a 40 something baby faced busker standing with a baseball cap in jeans and a Stradivarius in a subway, playing some of the most complexly beautiful pieces ever written? The fact is, most of us wouldn't know beauty if it hit us in the face. If it's not friend force in the right context, we ignore it completely. And here is the proof time. Despite all the planning, scheduling and multi tasking for so many of us, there never seems to be enough of it planning a daily agenda during our morning commute to work, paying online bills while walking a dog, checking news and responding to emails during the kid's soccer practice. That's the new normal in our society. We run nonstop around the clock, dividing our attention among millions of things. Constantly checking her watch is scrambling for more time, and every day feels more like one long rush hour. Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight flat road to nowhere. Be safe, be comfortable but doll and utterly pointless.
