Everyone feels anxious at times, and that's not a bad thing. Anxiety motivates us to prepare for important events and helps protect us when we are in harm's way. However, anxiety becomes problematic when it is overwhelming, out of proportion and interfering with relationships, responsibilities and daily activities. People experiencing anxiety are faced with many options. One option cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is supported by decades of clinical research. People often think therapy is just about talking. CBT is different. It is practical. Solution focused and helps people address their anxiety quickly and effectively. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behaviors all influence each other. Imagine a child. Henry is chaste and knocked over by dog one day while playing the park with his mother. The dog doesn't hurt Henry, but he is understandably upset and becomes afraid of dogs. His anxiety begins to generalize, and soon Henry experiences fear and unease when any animal approaches him or any time he goes to a park. Henry and his family begin to avoid these situations, which temporarily lowers his anxiety but over time sustains it and reinforces Henry's believe that he must avoid parks and animals to stay safe. CBT could help Henry and his family learned strategies to manage anxiety through the cognitive model, Henry learns to identify and evaluate unhelpful thoughts. He also works with his therapist to gradually begin approaching anxiety, provoking thoughts, sensations and situations that he has been avoiding. It is important to note that this process is done in small, incremental steps. Not all once an Austin Anxiety and Behavior health services.
