Our story begins at the highly regarded 300 Bed Capital Medical Center. Amidst an increasing patient census and a shift toward a patient centered care model, Capital merged its seven monitor, seven beds step down unit with 23 bed medical surgical unit. Before the change, acute patients were transferred from critical care units to step down and finally to a medical surgery. New model only required one transfer from critical care to the Flex unit. The new unit was expected to reduce length of stay in the costly critical care units and errors associated with numerous in house transfers. In addition, Capital also murdered it's housekeeping and central transport units into one department managed by the director of environmental services. This change was expected to improve throughput and reduced downtime for environmental services employees by guaranteeing immediate room turnover. Administration hoped new patient centered approach would improve satisfaction for patients and their families
