even after the government of Kenya waived fees for antenatal and postnatal care, records still show that many expectant mothers are delivering their babies at home under the care off traditional midwives and sometimes inexperienced and untrained attendance. In Kenya, as in most all the developing countries, maternal and infant mortality rates are still very high compared to the developing countries. A host or factors account for such numbers off infant deaths in Kenya, chief among them poverty in a country where more than 50% off the 40 million people live on less than a dollar a day. It comes as no surprise that most of the people cannot afford basic healthcare. The problem has been reinforced by the fact that most public health facilities are very far so that the mere cost of reaching a maternity hospital is considered substantial globally. As off 1999 the infant mortality rate was 80 infants by 1000. In developed countries, the rate was below 10 per 1000 while in developing countries it near 200 per 1000 infants.
