In a hotel room in the city of Goma, geologist and veteran mountaineer Ken Sims meets with adventure photographer Carsten Peter on assignment for National Geographic magazine to discuss their planned journey into the mouth of an active volcano. The expedition will climb to the volcano's summit at an altitude of 11,385 feet, using ropes and anchors. They will then to send 1300 vertical feet nearly the height of the Empire State Building to the third Terrorists and the rim of the Lava Lake. Nyiragongo has erupted twice in a 25 year span in 1977 and in 2002 and it could erupt at any time, with little warning, putting one million people in tremendous jeopardy. There's no doubt come again. The question remains when the expedition's goal is to advance the understanding of this mysterious volcano toe one day predict its next eruption before any lives are lost.
