In general, each market cycle lasts about five years, and within each cycle there are six stages. During each stage, certain asset classes outperform others. For instance, the bull market is usually a great time for stocks, but a bear market is usually better for commodities. The trick is to keep the appropriate balance, depending on which stage your in. During the forties and fifties, John Coltrane worked with some of the biggest names in jazz, from Duke Ellington to Dizzy Gillespie and even Miles Davis. But Coltrane was never overshadowed. His technical mastery was rivaled only by his creativity and vision, and even though he died young, he is widely considered the greatest player to pick up the sacks.
