This is the story of an idea, a story of determination and inspiration, a story that begins with one man, one spark. But even he would say the story is bigger than any one person. Like any great story, Hours begins humbly. In fact, it doesn't even begin as Wal Mart. In 1950 Sam Walton opened a Ben Franklin franchise called Walton's Five and Dime in Bentonville, Arkansas. It would be the birthplace of his guiding principles. Toe always put customers first and to help them save money, one only had to look down at his stores mismatched floor tiles to see how much Sam believed in everyday low cost. By 1960 Sam had nine Ben Franklin stores, but he knew his discount center idea was bigger than the franchise model. So in 1962 Wal Mart was born. That first store in Rogers, Arkansas, was 1/5 the size of today's average Walmart, and it didn't even have a logo. Two years later, a second Wal Mart opened. That's right, The second Walmart even had donkeys at its grand opening. But Sam and his team persevered and along the way pioneered. They created a wide horizontal ill in their stores called Action Alley, featuring the biggest savings, including Sam's favorite moon pies. Incredibly, from these modest beginnings, Walmart was already becoming a success. But it was the culture. Same was building that would have the biggest impact on the future. Ah, culture founded on respect and integrity, service and excellence, our culture, where associates were partners and empowered the lead for a brand that revolutionized retail more than once. It's easy to look at any period in Wal Mart's history and see tremendous growth and change. But it's the totality of that growth and the impact Walmart has had on both its customers and associates that tells a far more meaningful story. In 1970 Wal Mart went public, facing a big early test and staying true to itself. Of course, it helped having a leader who regularly sought advice from his associates and treated them as equals. In 1975 Forbes ranked WalMart number one among general retailers. The first Sam's Club opened in 1983 and by 1991 Wal Mart was ready to go international. All the while, Wal Mart innovated in distribution, satellite communications and inventory tracking and checkouts. and the milestones kept coming. The nineties saw the debut of Walmart Supercenters, the launching of online e commerce stores and becoming the largest private employer in the world. For Mr Sam, this was more than he ever imagined. Yet he never let success get to him. Even late in his life, he was famous for getting $5 haircuts and driving around in a 1979 pickup. In 1992 President George H. W. Bush awarded Sam Walton the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor. In true Sam fashion. He chose to receive the award in Bentonville, sharing this honor with those who helped to make Walmart a success, his associates sadly, less than a month later, Sam Walton passed away. His vision of helping people save money and live better with everyday low prices still lives on throughout our company, and it propelled our story to even greater heights as we entered the new millennium from humble beginnings. Wal Mart has come a long way since 1950 but the qualities that drive us into a new era are the very same that made us who we are integrity, service and proving our commitment to our customers, our associates and the community. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 WalMart led the nationwide corporate relief effort with over $18 million in 2450 truckloads of supplies. In 2010 WalMart pledged $2 billion to help end hunger in the U. S. As well as launched a global commitment to sustainable farming practices. Today we're dedicated, more than ever to being global servant leaders. We have a determined focus to sell sustainable products, use renewable energy and operate zero waste facilities. And once again, we're transforming retail with technological advancements in robotics, artificial intelligence, an augmented and virtual reality all to save people money and to help them live better. We've never lost sight of Sam's original idea to create a discount store for everyone. With over 11,000 stores worldwide and a growing e commerce business, Wal Mart is bringing unmatched savings to our customers fingertips. We will continue to strive to help our customers live better, and as long as we do that, the same passion that sparked Mr Sam back in 1950 will remain alive long into the future. In truth, the WalMart story is far from complete because it's really a hero. Is our team of committed individuals that stands today over two million strong. The Walmart brand is you our employees. Sam knew that right from the beginning in each of you is helping to write the next great chapter in the story of Wal Mart.
