Good evening. It's Monday, March 19th at 6 p.m. 100 years ago Today, Congress approved Daylight Savings time. I'm Bill Clough for W XPR News. Do the rapidly deteriorating trail conditions The user funded snowmobile trail system in Oneida County will officially close for the season at 10 a.m. Tomorrow. WJW TV is also reporting that Violence County will officially close its trails tonight at five PM and that Lincoln County will be closing its remaining snowmobile on a TV trails in Zone one tonight at Midnight Zone to End zone. Three trails in Lincoln County are already closed. In a press release, the United County Forestry Department said they would like to think all the snow me a book, snowmobile clubs and volunteers for their work in keeping our trails in great shape when you poured on your pancakes. You know it's good. This is the time of year when there's a lot of hard work put in by maple syrup producers to sweeten your life when the nights air cooled. But the days are above freezing its prime maple sap Collecting time. Jason Theresa Barone is executive director of the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association. she says the weather recently has been good for production. The tree tapping began a bit later, she says. There are producers who still do the traditional bucket or pail hung on a spike in the tree, but many are using a system akin to dairy production buckets. They're still used along with bags, but people are starting to use a tubing system to make it less labor intensive. In a tubing system, it's plastic tubing that comes from your tree at a gravity system that flows into per se like a bulk tanker staying with steel tank, making your collection a lot easier compared to collecting bags and pails, Baron says. Sales have risen as people are becoming more aware of nutrition. It's actually said that a banana in the nutrient value of maple syrup to table food is the same with you may need human potassium stuff in new maple syrup. It takes approximately 40 gallons of maple sap from the trees to make one gallon of pure maple syrup. Nothing is added to the sap to make maple syrup. On Lee, water is evaporated away. Wisconsin is fourth in the nation in maple syrup production, she says. that what makes it even better is that many of the producers are family run operations. This time of year, when many people travel toe warmer places and young people go on spring break is prime time for an ongoing telephone scam called the Grand Parents Scam. Ken Crawl tells us more. Wisconsin Department of AG Trade and Consumer Protection spokesperson Jared Albrecht outlines the scam. Someone gets a call out of the blue from a scammer who claims to be a relative of the potential victim and tells a potential victim that they've been in an accident or they're in jail there in some sort of a situation where they're in trouble and they need money quickly. Kind of one facet of the scam is that the the scammer will also try to convince the victim not to call anyone else for help. So if they claim to be a grandchild, will say please, I'm in trouble. I need money, but please don't call the police. Please don't call my parents the scammers air believable enough that many people get duped into sending the money, Albrecht says the spring break time also finds an increase in activity. If you're at home and you get any kind of an emergency phone called it sounds a bit suspicious. Don't trust it. Your best bet and the thing that we hear the most from people on our hotline who who keep from getting ripped off by the scam. They all say that they hung up the phone, and he immediately called that relative directly, or they called another family member to check in. Albrecht says some families have put together a plan in case this type of phone call comes in, he says they share the traveller's itinerary and contact information. He says they come up with a cold word or phrase to expect if they receive a legitimate call from a travelling relative in distress can crawl. W XPR News Artists have a chance to get their artwork viewed in many different places as a state is open up competition for the 2019 turkey, pheasant and waterfalls. Waterfowl stamp designs can crawl, has more. Jackie Christopher is a d n r upland wildlife assistant, either paintings or drawings, their specifications on size and the species. Obviously, we want the artwork to reflect turkeys in turkey, habitats are present, and waterfowl that are found in the state of Wisconsin. Funds derived from the sale of the stamps contribute to restoration and management efforts on thousands of acres of important wildlife habitat. Everyone who either hunts turkey or pheasant water follow needs to purchase a the Wisconsin state stamp, and all of that money goes into a fund to help habitat work. So throughout the state, different organizations can use the money to develop or maintain different habitat for those species. In last year's contest, Caleb Metric of Lake Tomahawk was awarded first place in the waterfall stamp contest to receive contest entry deadlines.
