from four star restaurants to casual cafes and bistros, Green County offers dining options to suit every taste. Our proximity to the world renowned Culinary Institute of America, located in Dutchess County and New York City just over 100 miles away, has drawn talented chefs to the area, and the county's rich ethnic heritage adds to the mix. Our landscape is also dotted with farms offering fresh produce, syrup, honey and even wine. On Day one of your visit starting Catskill with a strong cup of fresh roast coffee at Retriever Roasters or muddy cup retriever roasters, owners Robert and Janice luego take pride in educating their customers about every aspect of coffee. They believe that coffee is much more than a beverage, but a saver worthy experience. Get ready to get schooled on coffee by these roast masters. How did they get their name? You guessed it. It was influenced by their two golden retrievers, Jasper and Tamar. The Muddy Cup has been offering the community a place to go to share their art, their voice and their opinions on life in the world since it opened on January 19th 2007 after you've had your jolt of caffeine on Saturday mornings from June through October. Drive down to his store, Catskill Point, to the Farmers and Artisans Market, where you'll find fresh local fruits and vegetables, flowers, plants, cheeses, honey, baked goods, arts and craft vendors and more. Before you leave Catskill, pick up some homemade gourmet chocolates at Candyman chocolates, serving white regular in dark chocolates, along with a variety of fudge open seven days a week. You can also grab lunch at one of the cafes sprouting up in the historic brick buildings that line Main Street. Head up to the mountain top on Route 23 stop in at the Wyndham Vineyard and Winery, which was established in April of 2005. This airy venue is owned by James and Valerie Bateman, who came to our mountains via northern England. A 22 100 feet elevation above sea level, it is the highest elevation vineyard winery in the Northeast. The vineyard covers five acres of mountaintop land, cozy up to the wine bar or relax on the deck to sample Riesling, chardonnay, muscat merlot, cabernet sauvignon and other fine wines made in small batches. Along with making their own wine, the winery also features tasty mouth watering chocolates. Spend the night on the mountain top and take your pick from one of the half dozen or more restaurants that serve authentic German and Swiss gourmet cuisine. At the very least, indulgent a slice of exceptional black forest cake at Hartmann's Kathy House in Roundtop. If a taste of Europe isn't your thing, several restaurants are famous for wild game dinner in season and many others serve. Find American fare on day to begin your day at Mabel Hill Farms on Route 23 a about nine miles west of Hunter. Stock up on maple cream, sugar and syrup and farm fresh preserves. You can also take a tour of their sap house year round. But of course, the best time is when the boiling is going on. To get a lesson on how maple syrup is made continuing on Route 23 A.
