New Zealand's rugby ties with South Africa had caused controversy before the international community was trying to pressure the apartheid government to change by isolating it. Sporting links were being cut and South Africa was banned from the Olympics in 1964. So when the All Blacks toured the republic and 76 the rest of Africa was so angry they chose to boycott the Montreal Olympics rather than compete alongside New Zealand.
