partnership is the new leadership. By Ty Bennett. Ready for You by Mario Rivas What do you want from your people? Over a five year period, I conducted a survey of more than 5000 leaders. These men and women were in leadership positions at multiple industries and at every level, from supervisors to CEOs, from managers to C Suite executives. In this survey, I asked only one question. As a leader, What do you want from your people? More than 75% answered with the one word response of commitment. That's what we want, isn't it? We want our people to be dedicated to be all in. We want them to be passionate and loyal. We want them to give their very best because they want to, not because they have to. We want them to be committed. But here's the key. People are not committed to jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that today's average worker will hold 10 different jobs before age 40 and we'll have 15 to 20 jobs by the time they retire. And people are not committed to companies. People are ultimately committed to people. It's relationships that engender trust, respect, accountability and commitment. The old and Dodge said. Leadership is based on title position or authority, but people don't follow titles. They follow people. Have you ever heard the same people joined companies but leave bosses? It's a leadership they're committed to. That's why in today's world, partnership is a new leadership. A new economy requires a new approach to leadership. And if what we want is leaders, more than anything else is a commitment of our people, then we need to partner with them in order to foster an environment that naturally creates that commitment. Partnership is the new leadership. Recently, two cousins began fighting over a family business. This isn't really newsworthy. If you have ever been involved in a family business, then you know this is quite common. But what happened in this case was amazing. Arthur T. Demoulas was the CEO of a successful 71 store supermarket chain based in Massachusetts. Cold Market Basket Arthur T. Was not only CEO, he was part owner. He owned 49.5% of the business, to be exact. The majority owner was his cousin Arthur s tamales. It's already getting confusing. I know, but stay with me Arthur s owned 50.5% of the grocery store chain are 30. And Arthur s had very different views on leadership and how to run their company as a majority owner. Arthur s press the board and they force Arthur t out as CEO. Then something amazing happened. Over 20,000 employees and customers went on strike and support of our 30. Not only did they go on strike, they stopped food shipments from coming in and within weeks brought the business to a screeching halt. The stores looked like a scene out of a movie. Empty shelves, No customers, no employees just vacant. Why would the employees of market basket risk everything to show commitment to their leader? The answer is because Arthur t understood things that Arthur s didn't. Arthur s believed that his employees were committed to market basket. But the truth is, they were committed to their leader. Are 30. You see our 30? I knew that partnership is a new leadership
