oxidizing silver jewelry. When sterling silver is exposed to air, metal will oxidize overtime. Oxygen will cause the metal to develop a dark grey finished way deliberately oxidize some of our jewelry to attain a dark color for a more rustic and artisanal look. Oxidation, especially on rings, will wear off but can quickly and inexpensively be re oxidized. Whole process takes less than five minutes. Here's what you'll need. Liver of sulfur chunks, not liquid. A bowl of hot water, a bowl of cold water, wooden tops, a clean, dry town. The process. It's important your jewelry is clean and dry free of dirt and oils from your hands. Put about a cup of hot water in your bowl just below boiling. Drop a couple pieces of liver of sulfur into the hot water. Used the tongs to help it dissolve. Place your ring into the solution. It takes about a minute for the silver areas to become a very dark gray prince in cold water set on a clean towel to air drive. Here we have a beautiful contrast between the dark and silver and the gold colors. If you're looking for something more colorful, you want to follow the same process, but rinse the ring in cold water before it gets its darkest gray. Adding a bit of ammonia to the solution helps to bring out some of the blue toes. Dip your ring into the hot water. Here, you can start to see the metal turning from gold to brown the ring again. Now you can see some of the blues coming through. You can keep dipping and rinsing until you are happy with the colors.
