noise pollution. The word noise is a subjective term. We interpret sounds as being either pleasant, you funny or unpleasant cacophony. According to our preferences, however, noises may always be defined as unwanted, uncontrollable and unpredictable sounds. The damaging effect of chronic noise exposure is an increasing problem worldwide. Therefore, understanding the differences between noise and noise sources, as well as the effects of noise on the human psyche, is a vital part of a designer scope of practice. Research conducted on working conditions found that ambient noise irrelevant sounds related mostly to exterior sources can negatively impact psychological health and well being by affecting the immune system, which is partially regulated by the sympathetic nervous system. The top two emotional responses to noise are annoyance and anger, which people express either externally by showing irritability or aggression or internally by feeling increased levels of stress. Noise induced stress causes the human survival system to pump adrenaline epinephrine into the bloodstream when the body perceives a danger signaled by noise. This worked well for early humans, but the constant internal alarms signaled by modern, especially urban noise levels, is destructive to the human body. Noise can lead to numerous health problems, including tonight US ringing in the ears, fatigue, headaches and stress related illnesses such as increased heart rate, high blood pressure ulcers and migraine headaches. If the noises both loud and sustained hearing convey impaired or lost infants exposed to continuous noises in neonatal intensive care units are at risk for either hearing loss or slow growth and development. Almost 12.5% of US Children from ages 6 to 19 years already have noise related health problems. Obvious sources of noise pollution include internal combustion engines, construction and demolition operations, and horns, sirens and alarms. Figure 6.5. Studies have listed highway vehicles, aircraft and urban traffic as the most bothersome sources of noise, followed by loud music and movies, restaurants, garden and lawn equipment, recreational vehicles, bars, nightclubs and neighbors. In addition, complaints of neighbors making too much noise have increased sharply in recent years, but noise pollution is not limited to exterior environments or sources. Televisions, sound systems, video games and cellular phones generate a great deal of interior noise, as do Children in daycare, pre school and classroom settings.
