Bear could tell. Jack was enjoying himself had been a while since they got two rib each other, and it was much better to do it in person than over the phone. Bear couldn't even bring himself to be annoyed. It was just nice to be back in the same place like old times, except it wasn't like old times. Jack was still considered a terrorist at large, and the threat of the next World war was hanging over their heads. Let's go somewhere noisier, Jack said. Bear nodded and follow Jack as they wove their way back to the crowd. Octoberfest in Germany is better than anything you could ever experience in the United States. It's what dreams are made off food and women and beer and friends, big, burly men hugging each other and laughing an atmosphere that begs you to let go of all your problems and just enjoy yourself. And Bear was hardly seeing any of it. Jack look less concerned, but Bear noticed the tension in his shoulders. He was ready for anything. He probably had a weapon on him, too. Despite the density of the crowd, it would be dangerous to pull a gun out on a place like this. But if this turned into an US or them scenario, Bear will be glad to choose. The Ukrainian lost part in a garage on center street had walked east into Albanian territory alone. He was 50 years old and built like a bronze statue of an old hero. Tall, hard and solid, he called himself Gregory, which was his close as Americans could get pronouncing his given name. He was unarmed, and he was wearing tight pants and a tight T shirt to prove it. Nothing in his pockets. Nothing concealed. He turned left and right, borrowing deep, heading for a back street block where he knew the Albanians ran their businesses out of a suite of offices in back of a lumber yard. He was followed all the way from his first steps across the line. Calls were made ahead so that when he arrived he was faced by six silent figures, all standing still in the half circle between the sidewalk and the lumber yards gate like chess pieces in a defensive formation, he stopped and held his arms out from his sides. He turned around slowly, a full 360 his arm's still held wide tight pants, tight T shirt, no lumps, no bulges, no knife, no gun. Unarmed in front of six guys who undoubtedly weren't. But he wasn't worried to attack him. Unprovoked was a step the Albanians wouldn't take. He knew that courtesies had to be observed. Manners were manners. One of the six silent figure stepped up partly a blocking maneuver, partly ready to listen, Gregory said, I need to speak with Dino. Do you know was the Albanian boss? The guy said, Why? I have information about what? Something he needs to know. I could give you a phone number. This is a thing that needs to be said face to face. Does it need to be said right now? In the year before she died, Beatrix Rose taught her daughter many things daughter how to lie and how to tell when someone else was lying, the benefits of meditation and how it was useful strategy for enduring long stretches of time without sleep or other comforts, how to detect when she was being followed and how to follow someone without being seen. She taught her other things too. For example, how important Waas to write first for rendezvous. It was good manners, for one, but this was much more important. The person arriving first for an appointment could control how the appointment unfolded. She could choose the environment, a table where it would be difficult to be eavesdropped on the seat, offering the best view of the ways in and out. An agent did not want the seat that put her back to the door. She certainly did not want to be the person arriving last. It was rude and the most important. It decreased your chances of leaving control had contacted her a week. Control had contacted her a week ago to propose that they meet. He had suggested that he come to Morocco, but Isabella had declined far better for her to go to him.
