a eulogy delivered in memory of Edward Loman, champion at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Plains, Virginia. March 15th 1991. Door after door house after house. One grateful client after another Eddie champion kept his chin up through December snows in August heat. He trudged onward, his suitcase in hand, the lining of his trench coat riddled with safety pins, holding some of its most popular demonstration items through family crisis and illness. Recession, political upheaval. He stayed the course and kept to his appointed rounds. I always knew that nothing short of an act of God would ever stop him, but now I stand here saddened, remembering him as if his life were a story in some book. I hung out with Eddie now and then on his runs through Philly in Baltimore and watched him carefully so that I might, you know, emulate him. I didn't realize then that I'd never be like him, that he was gifted. He had something that only God can give or take away, a way of showing people what was important of helping them to see what was right. Everybody loved him. His voice was like music. Of course, he never got his hands dirty, never wasted his time taking things apart, putting them back together. He just provided a quality replacement for less than the cost of a repair. He taught people how important it was for them to own new things and to discard old things.
