the right to vote is the key to democracy. Political systems throughout history have sought to limit access to this right, including our own government when it was founded. While our voting laws were more liberal than any other government at the time, limiting the vote to male landholders today would be considered an outrageous idea. So why were they so wary of giving the vote to everyone? It's a natural tendency to be conservative when it comes time to give someone else the power to decide your fate. Since the wealthy and intellectual class is usually create governments, it's only natural that they try to give themselves the maximum amount of protection within it. If you were creating a government from scratch and the people said they were for you, but it had never been put to the test, would you automatically give them the right to vote you out of a job
