It's not just house plants that help improve air quality trees due to they absorb potentially harmful gases, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. It has been reported that residential proximity to vegetation is associated with lower levels of stress, aggression, diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that Children living in greener areas have lower levels of asthma, blood pressure and insulin resistance. Trees and their canopies are not only linked to better air quality, but also have been proven to reduce violence. A 10% increase in tree canopy area is associated with a 12% decrease in crime. So the next time you want to breathe better and feel safer, stand under a tree. Or better yet, go plant one. Picnicking under trees with a friend is one of my favorite ways to dine.
