views expressed to those of the host guests and callers, not necessarily those of news radio. 10 40 w h o. And it is news radio. 10 40 wh show Jan Michaelson in the morning. Except Jan's not here, so we're doing our very best, not I'm not Jan. I'm sorry to say I am not Daniel. Sorry about that. I have in the studio with me a couple of guys from the split second band Bill Jonathan and Garret Anderson and the guys Air Des Moines area band who are being inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Coming up this Labor Day weekend, we've just been talking a little bit about how how very long you guys have been at it. Really? You just never stopped. Did you started doing gigs and you just never stopped? No, we started way just we don't slow down. We've we go looking. We've, uh, just keep working at it. It's just fund us. Well, it has to be, or you couldn't possibly be doing it this long. So we've been talking a little bit about different places that you play. And of course, you have a couple of regular gigs up in Clear Lake, don't you? We hear dio way. Play it. Uh, the boathouse, which is right next to the surf ballroom, which is a ah, great venue for us. We play up there during the Buddy Holly weekend or what do they call it? Garrett. Winter dance party E get trouble. What? We do not have the copyright permission to say that. So Maria Elena would kill us. Or suicide. I don't know Which is worse, E So winter dance party weekend. You're pretty much a regular thing up there at the place, right next door to the surf on. You've been at the V f W before. One notable occasion recently, you played on my wedding reception. I am. I am ratting you out on this. It's his wedding reception and he played the whole night. You are very lucky. You're married to one of those tolerant women We were talking about, Lynda. So in addition to that one, then you just have a new one out of the landing. That's landing is a new place. They put they build a dock at the Western Best Western out. There were no what its Heartland in Heartland. And which is on what? South Shore? Yeah, sure. So couple, three places there. They're gonna put us on a barge, I guess, and shoot into where the people said It's not a real big place. So that's where the advantage of having a three piece band comes in. That's right. And what is it? Uh, we have players. We used to play it up there. Oh, yeah. Okay. The Tiki Bar Tiki bars on the south shore of Lake over there by PM Park. That's part of that. So So really, you gig around and clear, like, a lot like you said as many gigs and clear lake as in Des Moines. We're doing in 1967 class reunion at the Frank Lloyd Wright Hotel. Oh, really? So weekend. Oh, that sounds really fun. You know you're gonna have gatecrashers now, right? Well, there probably will be. I'll be stunned if you don't. You told you, toe? Yeah, that'll help. The band invited us. Get out. So that is coming up during the car show with September. That's what is that? First of August in August. Okay. Okay, So you're pretty busy around Des Moines also, I mean, you've really stayed very busy in every permutation of the band. And I know you and I talked about the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame here a while back. Eso I'm really glad that your turn came around because it's totally your turn. We're proud, and we're glad we're gonna bring **** Moylan with us. You know, he's gonna, uh, come along with us. You know, he ****, he built the band with us. Sure on. And that's the way it should be. I mean, no one should be excluded unless they want to be. You know, if they don't wanna participate, that's up to them. But that I mean, you shouldn't be excluding anyone. Guys want to take a caller? Sure. Okay. Got chuck on the line. Here, let me see. There we go. Chuck, are you there? Yes, I am. I didn't even you know, I Central Iowa, especially has an amazing abundance of great live, you know, great band. Uh, anybody picks up Jews or date book every week. There is no reason to say that there's nothing to do and nothing to listen to here in Central Iowa. But I have never heard of the I Will Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I'm wondering if some of the ones some of the people that I'm familiar with around here that I've been listening to for years, like Bob Case or or Tony Valadez flipside, Bob are Dale, Fax Man Jones or some of those people in the Hall of Fame. I am. I recognize at least a couple of those names, and I believe so. Now there is on the website Iowa Rock and Roll, Iowa Rock and roll dot com. You can find a full list of all of the inductees, and they're not how many are there? You know, I thought we had we had Tom and John, I think, he said, was something like 1200 eso its's been Yeah, I might take a while. E. Some of these guys like Bob Pace. Have you heard of him? A been around for 30 some years and, uh, different variety of band solo. And there's not a better. In my opinion, there's not a better guitar player. Uh, probably anywhere in the country that could say they're actually better than Bob Pace. And and then, of course, Tony Valdez and these different ones. So yeah, Tony's that website. Tony's Antonio echoes five. Alright. Sure he is sure he is. What echoes what he's in with the echoes. Five. Tony Echoes. Five. Yeah, I heard him with his big band and his small band And, uh, that goes by something from, like, 2030 years ago. Maybe. Yeah, it's one that he was in right out of high school. If I remember right. Are they still playing? Though they get together thinking that maybe year seven years ago has been around a long time, they're still playing. And, uh, a lot of the guys that Tony plays within his large band and the retro rockets and stuff Joe Hernandez with the Cavaliers. They're in there. Cavaliers. I remember them. There was a show band that used to play at a dinner club over on floor. Uh, sure, Dr. Years and years ago, Andre had the horn is kind of like this group. I hear that about faculty lounge, but eyes your group split second e See you in the daybook all the time. We haven't heard you yet, so we have toe seek you out. And what type of music do you play? It is it all? Covers it, pop a zit. Rock is a mixture, it's a mixture, and it's all it's all covers. We don't really do any of our own writing, Okay? But, you know, depending on what night you show up with the crowds like we might be doing an oldie set, we might be doing all Jimmy buffet type party music. Well, good. You just never know what we're going to dio. It's good that you can adapt to the crowd pretty much a necessity if you're going to stay busy, that's for sure. And check. I did want to tell you that the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is located in the Iowa Great Lakes region, Uh, specifically in Arnold's Park in the park. Right under the coaster is where the actual facility is, but it's a statewide organization, so their acts from all over the state we do events from all over the state all over the state of sponsored events. So now will there be a separate organization for like blues and a separate one for country? And there is a blues. I will Blues Hall of Fame, I believe I'm not sure about country. I don't know about that. You know, that one guy's okay, but maybe there should be. Maybe someone should invent that. All right. Thank you. Thank you very much. Jack. Appreciate the call up. Next. Guys, are you in the mood for another phone call? Because I got a guy by the name of John on the line who says the split second band ruined him, but in a good way. John, are you there? Yeah, I'm here. You guys from my class reunion I don't remember must spend 10 years ago. But you put on such a good show, I could come nowhere near anything together is good at what we had that night. Yeah. Where was that B M park? Clearly. Okay. Okay. Yeah, yeah, I think you remember that night because it went on for the whole night. That was That was a good party. The really bad part was all those steps at the end of the night. You guys stayed in the hotel next room and the rest of us didn't go to bed. You guys wanted thio beating on the walls. Shut up! Quiet! You party psychos. I can't imagine us weren't missing a party. Good. Really? What way? You guys took my pontoon. That's right way. Did you, Tammy, Tammy drove the pontoon. Yeah, well, my wife was driving it last night and got arrested for not having the lights on fireworks on the lake and no lights. Oh, they went out earlier in the day and they forgot to turn the lights on when it got dark. Oops is right. Boy, you're lucky you didn't have to throw bail for that one. They weren't messing around with that. Lots of boats on the lake. So? So your dreams of a rock and roll career and rock and roll godhood were completely ruined by split second split Second, is that right? Well, it was such a great show. I mean, they played to the crowd, and everybody just kept moving all night. It just things just click when it works. It works, doesn't it? Yeah. They knew if they knew how to make, you know, keep the people into it. That's another helpful skill, Bill. Just a little experience. Just a little bit. I remember. I remember I hired you guys tonight that you were playing on the north side of Coral Lake. And Princess Diana died wear over at the waterfront. Yeah, and I thought you were so good. I went got hold of that night. I told you I was coming. Okay? Wow, It's amazing. The things that come rushing back, isn't it? Well, listen, John, we're sorry we ruined your life, but thanks for the call. Okay? We're not sorry. Thanks so much, John. Appreciate it. Uh, in the studio with me, the split second band or some of it. Anyway, Dominic, who is the drummer and is married to someone I know, couldn't be here today, but I dragged these two guys in whether they wanted to go or not being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this weekend. You're from our excuse me this Labor Day weekend. Yes. Guys, you're late. Get on the road, your light. But its's eso Is it outside idling right now? Hope so. It's always are idling for us. I suppose so. But it really is. It's a lot. It's a fun weekend. It's fun to be recognized. Especially, uh, the association is inducting more bands now that air still playing in the early days it was folks that maybe hadn't even seen each other and, you know, 30 years and eso there. I guess that was kind of interesting at the outset because some of these folks went, The band broke up for a reason. And I know of at least one example where there was a near fistfight at the members induction. Or at that, the induction party. You know where it was? Just the bands. And, um, some people had to walk other people away from each other. Just kind of do one of those. Okay, let's all take deep breaths. Now, that was in 1969. It's about time you took a deep breath, OK? Eso that's the advantage of bands that are still playing is that if you're annoyed about something, probably everybody already knows about it. And it's not something that you've been hanging onto for 40 years and annoying the living daylights out of yourself. Okay. Looks like it is time for us to do a little business. So we're gonna go do that. This is the Jan Michaelsen show without Jan Michaelson on news radio, 10. 40 W
