Chapter two, The mighty Thor Development and testing the two or intermediate range ballistic missile weapons system came about during planning for the logical follow on to tactical missiles such as the Mace and Matador. Dr. James Killian released his eponymous Killian report in February 1955 to the National Security Council, recommending the United States Air Force develop a ballistic missile for land and ship launching with an inherent range of roughly 1500 miles. The challenges within the longer range intercontinental ballistic missile program were daunting. The problems behind a shorter range system, however, were relatively less complicated, and the reasoning stood that the system could be finished sooner.
